I stumbled across this video while looking at Maverick reviews, and I think some of it is really good, and some of it doesn't quite land for Mavericks.

First off, watching the video does have me questioning things like maintenance costs with an engine + hybrid system, and longevity + replacement costs of the battery.

But I think the author missed a big one on the price points. Let me explain:

For simplicity I'm going to discuss the 2025 AWD + 4K towing configurations, because that's what I want to actually buy. The hybrid Maverick is more expensive than the ecoboost. And it will pay for it's $2,200 101A equipment group in roughly 5 years based on the fuel savings on the window sticker. But the video fails to mention that the 5 year savings is against a mythical average truck, not the ecoboost. And the ecoboost looses about 200 dollars a year vs that mythical truck economy. So we're going to find out how long you need to own the truck for just the fuel savings to make the hybrid break even.

Starting with an Ecoboost with the AWD + 4K towing:

Ford Maverick What are your thoughts on these points against owning a hybrid truck? 1747140002571-2c

This truck has a MSRP of $30,550 and a "slope" of +$200 per year in additional fuel costs vs the average.

Next up the hybrid:

This truck has a MSRP of $32,350 and a "slope" of -$500 per year in saved fuel costs vs the average.

Plotting them gives:

So your actual break even point for buying a hybrid (maintenance and all else being equal) is just under 3 years. I think that counts as "not bad."

I personally have no interest in a hybrid. ICE and/or BEV for me, but of course, everyone's use case is different, so for some, a hybrid might make sense. You can find plenty of support for any side, pending your prejudice. Know your needs/wants, do your research. 🤠

Second I hat the Auto stop start feature with the engine shutting off at a stop, it would drive me crazy if it did it while driving when it switches to battery. So for me personally the hybrid would never have broke even in VALUE to me.
Just to note but in my experience the autostop/start on the hybrid is barely perceptible vs the ecoboost because of how smooth the electric motor engages.

I never test drove a ecoboost Maverick but my Focus RS had a very obvious and annoying autostop/start which I disabled. If the current Mav is similar on the ecoboost, I would also disable it. It's one of the reasons I ended up with the hybrid awd vs a tremor coming from BEV lol.

When I called my insurance I was asked if it was a hybrid and I said no. My agent told me the hybrid is higher to insure AND he would have to add a rider to the homeowners that costs more because of the battery and fire dangers. I know people claim there is no more danger than any other battery but insurance charges based on actual claims paid out not anecdotal evidence.
Insurance Co's are different too. Oddly enough, the full coverage on our Mach-E cost LESS than the cheaper ICE Honda Pilot it replaced, and no change to our homeowners, even tho we park & charge in the garage. Further emphasizing to do the research on YOUR actual situation. 🙂

I drove both. But I didn't like the hybrid. I am old and didn't want to learn a new system and the maintenance etc. Until we run out of dead dinosaur blood I will drive an ICE. My Lariat is AWD.
You do know the hybrid is an ICE vehicle as well, right? RIGHT?

Right, none of the pro's and con's here take into account personal preferences. The video's points are mostly to slow people's roll if they think hybrids are made with unicorn dust or something. I'm probably one of those people, so it helps to consider the fire risks, insurance costs, etc.

No SH*T! And it has a battery and servo motor. Now pick nits elsewhere. You buy what the he double hockey sticks you want I will buy what I want. I gave MY reasons for NOT buying a hybrid. They are like mules the worst of a donkey and a horse and also the best of a donkey and a horse but still a mutant!
Well reason I asked is you said you'd only drive an ICE, suggesting you didn't know what a hybrid is. A hybrid is an ICE vehicle. We put gas in them just like you and don't ever need to charge them. It just uses a larger battery as an accumulator to hold excess energy vs non-hybrid using a small 12v only.

After about 25 years of use they've pretty much perfected the drivetrain.

I owned a 2023 Tremor and I now own a 2025 Lariat AWD Hybrid.

I will own a 2028 Maverick PowerBoost with the 2.0 singer and HF55 =)

They are both great options but I found the 8F35 and 2.0EB to be rough and unrefined especially compared to the hybrid drivetrain. I couldn't stand the mid size truck fuel economy and limited tow/haul capacity of the Tremor. Understand an EB with 4K tow package improves upon those short comings but the hybrid drivetrain is far superior in my opinion.

Oh wow! After 3+years, somebody finally started a thread on the topic of whether hybrids are a good or bad idea. I mean, why hasn't anybody started a thread like this before? How could we have possibly missed discussing this topic for all this time!

click bait video is clickbaity. It is almost certain your maintenacne costs will be more over 10 years, but batteries isn't it, that was a concern 10 years ago, they've figured out how to make batteries last, mostly by not charging and discharging them fully. There are more things to go wrong on a hybrid, and more things you can't fix yourself. That said, you can buy a 10 year old Prius (basically our tech) and they are fine. I would've gotten a hybrid if they had been avaialable, I wanted a truck, not an 18 month wait.

Yeah name and shame that insurance company because that is absurd.

My 2025 Lariat AWD Hybrid costs less to insure ($7/mo) than my 2024 Honda Civic 1.5T cost, I pay $600 for the year.

Erie Insurance Company.

I have Eire. Read your policy! If you are paying 600/year you have the lowest level of coverage available. Mine in 1100/year and almost 800/ year for my 2005 Mustang. But I carry really high liability because I want INSURED against lawsuits.
Lowest level???

Bodily injury - $250k individual/$500k accident
Property damage - $100k per accident
Medical - $5,000/person
Window deductible - $100
Full Comprehensive deductible - $500

Includes rental car assistance, roadside service, and an extra rider for $500k if hit by an uninsured motorist.

I don't see any reason to carry additional coverage beyond what is listed above.
