Just some thoughts:

Waited 54 weeks on the dot. Originally ordered an XL with no add ons, but then changed to XLT so that it would actually get built. This appeared to work because a week after switching form XL to XLT, it was scheduled. HIGHLY recommend going to the next trim up if you're tired of waiting. Getting the truck at all and at 2023 prices was absolutely worth the extra $3k or so for the upgrade. I could have lived with the steelies, but I also really like the look of the upgraded tires, for whatever that is worth.

For reference, I had a 2004 FWD Tacoma during 2013-2016; a 2008 Prius from 2016-2021; a 2013 Prius from 2021-2023.

The Maverick drives very well - way better than a Prius and it feels bigger and more train-like than the Tacoma. I am getting just under 35 mpg on the highway going faster than I probably should. In town its in the 40-50 mpg range. It is comfortable and very spacious. I got my bed sprayed after buying and using my FordPass points, it cost about $360. I also bought Ford mats to replace the front carpet mats and so I would have mats in the back too (FYI the base XLT hybrid does not come with rear mats of any kind - I did not know this). I also bought a generic Coverado seat cover for the back seats because I am a pilot for a living and I am constantly throwing my roller bag on the seats. As per the recommendation of lots of people here, I sprayed some of that 303 stuff on the plastic parts that will take a beating. But I haven't noticed the plastic scratching at all, really. I also just ordered a Raceface T2 tailgate cover for hauling mountain bikes around.

I am not a big car person, so I don't need super fancy, super high end. I want reliable, long lasting, practical, and cheap to operate. This truck is all of those. I could have bought the super high end Lariat with leather seats and every bell and whistle, but in my opinion, that would have been defeating the design philosophy and purpose of the truck. That is just more stuff to break or damage. If I wanted the nicest, baddest truck out there, I would have gone with something else.

I plan to drive this thing until the wheels fall off, hopefully many years and many hundreds of thousands of miles. With that in mind, I plan to invest in a few more upgrades and modifications. The speakers work fine and sound fine, but being really into high quality audio, I am planning to upgrade speakers. I may buy one of those 600 lb Scout truck bed campers in a few years too, and install a hitch to potentially get a set of Waverunners or something.

I highly recommend watching this video in which one of the head designers describes all the thinking that went into designing this truck. It is kind of built for practical, efficiency-loving nerds like me in that every aspect of the truck was built with a certain demographic in mind. And it lives up to that perfectly.

Finally, a photo I caught early one morning just a week or two after picking the truck up. If you have any questions about the truck in general, don't hesitate to ask!

You might have jumped the gun on calling your Mav reliable. Quality is one of its only issues, but it is glaring.

Quality is subjective as some people will have the inherent issues while others will have a truck with zero issues. It's like this on basically every brand. So far, I've had my truck 2 weeks and ZERO issues all the while getting 47.8 MPG and on the same tank from delivery (should easily eclipse 600 miles on the first tank). But YMMV. 👍

We have about 15,000 km on our 2003 XLT Cactus Gray Hybrid, and have had no problems with it at all.

I agree with your assessment and reason behind going XLT. I ordered a 23 XLT hybrid with the sliding rear window and a hitch. When the order bank closed after 3 or 4 days I tracked down a zero option XL hybrid because I wasn’t sure my XLT would be built. In the 350 or so days I waited for the XLT to be built I racked up 50k miles. ALL RELIABLE!!!!! (I did have the exhaust heat exchanger replaced under warranty) I’m 10k into the XLT in the 2 months I’ve had it and have had no issues.
Watching the constraint list and abiding really works. Soon after I dropped my trailer hitch, which was a constraint my 23 was scheduled.
Nice write up, I like the Area 51 in the sunrise!!
