Nearly everything on a smart phone requires a data plan. You can makes calls with your phone connected to Android Auto, you just can't use speech to do it. My Mav can read my text messages, but I am sure it is also using my data plan, as does the canned text responses. I think you are stuck just making calls and pulling over for texting.

The 2025 Lariat has a 5G hotspot using AT&T, but it is not free, or cheap. At least that is what all the documentation I have see says.

Would love to know! Give it a try. I buy a cheap truck and they expect me to drop 80$ a month on a phone bill too.
I have T-Mobile $55/mo. Unlimited 5g data. 2 cell phones + 1 wifi hub TV streaming unlimited with 3 TV's running with computer wifi to TV streaming. Total bill is about $165/mo

I think what may be confusing to the OP and others is the Wi-Fi data hotspot that I believe has been put back in the 25my Maverick 's (sync4) . I remember that in my 23, the Wi-Fi hotspot was a mandatory delete option ($25 credit). Chip shortage.
The OP would have to BUY a data plan from a Ford compatable supplier to be able to have consumer useable data in the Maverick, not the FOMOCO diagnostic data.
The only way that I know how to send text messages is through the app on a smart phone. The phone then sends the message using cellular data on your phone or Wi-Fi data on phone or connected Wi-Fi hotspot.
IF there is a way of bypassing the smart phone, that's way above my computer skills.

My initial question is does your current plan have unlimited calling and text?

If you can send unlimited texts on your phone, then it is a setup problem between the truck and your phone. I use android auto and most if not all the settings are under Settings->Advanced Features->Android Auto. To select which apps are shown on the infotainment screen, select Custom Launcher. Google assistant is also setup under Assistant on the Android Auto phone screen.

I suppose I have a cell signal, but not unlimited mobile data.
You can get unlimited talk & text + 5gb of un-throttled data from T-mobile for $15/month, plus tax. The plan is called "Connect by T-mobile" and you have to specifically ask for it. Otherwise, they will not offer it to you.

But please don't text while driving. Please.

My family pays about half that for our 4 phones+internet and TV. Out of my control anyway!

Ozark, are you opposed to texting via voice to text, or just in the conventional sense while driving?

🧐Hmmm

🤔
$25 a month with Mint Mobile get you unlimited 5G unlimited Voice and text.
Let's see if I've got this correct. You've got 2 gigs now, w/ TV and you're saying that 5G isn't enough for $15 a month.
So, if you have 2 gigs you have a data plan. I'm willing to bet that you have unlimited texting also.
I’ve heard bad things about Mint Mobile in regards to speed throttling.

$25 for the monthly Ford Connectivity plan, with unlimited data, through AT&T. $240/year

If you stop reading them while driving that'll prevent the need to reply.
Reading them? Siri asks if I want her to read them; I don't think that reading them on the screen is an option.

She also does most transcription without using data (and she's just as good at embarrassing autodistortions as the server ever was, like the time she dropped an F-bomb on my mother!)

As for my own plan, I'm paying US Mobile. $12 of unlimited talk and text, and $5g shareable. I could drop to $10 for 2g, which I've never hit, or change my wife from $10 to $8 and share my data. You can have any of the three major carriers at that price.

If someone wants them, let me know--ithink we both get a cookie out of a referral.

I think that their unlimited data and hotspot is $27.

I heard bad things about Ford and Maverick. I still own one. 🤷‍♂️
Speed throttling happens to a lot of the discount services who buy time on the major networks.
Oh, Mint Mobile is owned by T-Mobile.
For folks on a fixed or limited income it's one of the best deals out there.
