I have figured it out finally. When I receive a message, I have to physicality hit the android auto button on the bottom of the screen, then it will prompt me to read or reply. Sync 3 would do this automatically.

In my experience, to receive texts via Sync 3 only (i.e. with CarPlay/AndroidAuto disabled), the message has to come through via SMS. SMS is becoming increasingly less common with Android defaulting to using RCS chats and iPhones using iMessage.

An exception at the moment is texts between Android phones and iPhones as those will come through as SMS (due to Apple refusing to adopt RCS OR open up their iMessages, but I could rant about that...😆 ). Sync 3 cannot read RCS messages. I am not certain, but I would guess it cannot read iMessages either.

I'm more confused now than I was before. I have an XL - When I connect my iPhone via USB (cord or Dongle) I can receive text messaged from both Android and iPhones. The truck will convert text to audio and even allow me to respond to those messages via voice. I also have many (but not all) of the screens shown in the "Sync 3 If Equipped" section of the Owners Manual.

Thanks everyone for the replies. I should clarify my situation. I do have android auto that hooks up automatically every time I get in to my truck through a Motorola dongle.
In my Ranger (sync 3), when a text message is received, I'm asked if I want it read aloud and then asked if I would like to reply. In my Maverick, all I get is a tone letting me know that a text is received, but am not given the option of it being read aloud; I have to pick up my phone to read and answer the text. My question is: do a have something in settings wrong in my truck or something set wrong in my phone ?
I don’t know if I’m tracking but…In Apple CarPlay, I turned that off at the phone level. I didn't want messages coming up with somebody in the car that I didn't want them to hear that.

I'm not sure what you mean. The full sync version on Lariat Mavericks do not support wireless Android auto or carplay without an adapter either.
Yeah, I'm still perplexed as to why they added a wireless charging pad and No Wireless AA or Carplay ability.

I use the Moto MA1 AA adapter and it's worked flawlessly.
Do you have a wireless charging device as well? If so, what's good? Thanks

Interesting.

I use Android Auto with sync 3, Motorola MA1 wireless dongle and Pixel 6A phone. I can receive texts if I'm in the truck when it's sent and respond via voice perfectly.

If I try to view texts stored in the phone using Android Auto, most will not show up unless it was received during my time in the truck. Therefore, I cannot look at or respond to most texts that I may have received earlier in the day.

I'm trying to determine if it's a setting issue, or just the nature of the beast. I did notice the texts I could view were SMS.

I wonder if this is related a SMS versus RCS chat issue? I know my wife can text me and I receive it, but I am not sure it wasn't converted to SMS automatically. Normally it is RCS Chat between our phones when it's not done thru my truck.

I don't have an example of a conversation we had while I was driving to check on whether it was RCS or SMS, though, so..................?

I must say, being able to listen to, and send texts hands free is pretty cool!(y)
Without that ability, I certainly wouldn't be doing it.

Since my post, Apple has reluctantly agreed to finally support RCS chats, so SMS may be a thing of the past in the next couple years (except for things like one time passcodes, etc.).

I think your earlier point about AA not being able to read texts from earlier in the day is a "feature". Google probably says it's for safety or something. Not sure if CarPlay is the same way though.

LOL, I have been struggling this last week with the same issue. This is my first experience with a integrated car entertainment system "helping me". I wasn't going to post since I figured only I would have issues like this.

The first two months of having the Mav and having the Android Auto connected I got notifications on the screen and a voice prompt that a Text from So-so was received and did I want to listen or respond. Perfect.

Buuuut, every so often Podcast would start playing at start up and the only way to get local Radio was to grab the phone and disconnect Android Auto.. But isn't the purpose of these systems so that you don't have to be distracted??? I know, somehow I have become an old man who listens to AM radio or local FM sportstalk.

I finally found a setting on Android auto to turn off. "Start Media automatically" buut now I only get a sound notification that a text has arrived and have to go thru the phone to read.

I assume the setting is somewhere in between the AA settings on the phone and those kept in the car settings? I may just do the old install reinstall to start over.

I have also been tracking the thread about the subpar performance and placement of the Handsfree Mic.

Nice to know that others have issues as well.

btw

GET OFF MY LAWN!!!

Rickster, I too have deselcted the "Start Media Automatically" so my phones Sirius XM and Pulsar music app won't start on their own, but my received texts do still give me a prompt and ask if I want to respond. So, what you're asking for is not impossible.

My guess is, it is a setting "somewhere".

Or, as you said, maybe a fresh re-install might fix it?

Good luck!

I found the answer to a question I had earlier, which is above.

If a person uses Google Messages, open the app, go to the top right, select the circle with your initial, then to "Messages settings", then select "General", then scroll down to "Automatic previews", then toggle on "Show all previews".

I did that and previous texts stored before entering the vehicle showed up in Andoid Auto. (y)
