I've been wondering if a bump step adds any significant protection if rear ended, and I'm guessing the answer is it depends on impact speed. I welcome hearing any experience with this.

I have never come close to being rear-ended since I've gotten my Maverick, but in the 6 months I've owned it I've had four or five cars pull out in front of me. I'm like, what am I freaking invisible? Couple days ago a UPS truck started to pull out and if I didn't hit my brakes he would have slammed right into my side. And then he gave me a look, like he was saying, "sowwy.".

After reading about the accidents that people have had I thought well things happen. But I've had more close calls in the 6 months of this Maverick than I did in the previous 20 or 25 years of driving my Camry and my Plymouth Voyager. There must be something about the Maverick.
My theory is most pickups are bigger resulting in the smaller Maverick appearing to be farther away than it actually is to inattentive drivers.

I got a 2023 and recently was rear ended. The crash happened at pretty low speed I was going about 15mph and slowing down and driver was going about double the speed. Well the body was pushed and the passenger into the passenger rear door opening. Anyhow the truck being totaled. The Unibody is bent. The truck don’t hold up to well in a crash. Anyone else have issues.

New vehicles are designed to fold up in a crash to protect the occupants. It is designed that way for safety. I would think any late-model vehicle is that way. It isn't a bug. It is a feature.

People just drive like idiots these days. They speed and cut traffic like crazy here

I've always flashed my brake lights on and off if I see traffic moving too fast in my rear view mirror especially while stopped . Started that habit over 50 years ago when I used to ride a motorcycle .
Even now , living on a busy , main street, people try to rear end my Mav as I slow down to navigate the turn into our driveway .

I've done that exact thing for decades. I started doing it back in the 70s when i got a CDL.
You turn your Hazard lights on every time you come to a stop light behind a line of cars?

I guess "Use common sense" should have been included.🙄

Smart phone use while driving may be the main culprit for rear end crashes. Colorado just passed a law that forbids touching a phone while driving even at stop lights.
How are they truly going to enforce this law is a question.
I have made an extra effort to not touch phone for the common sense of it.

Approaching a slowdown, I always tap the brakes 3 times lightly just to wake up the person behind me. Because let's be honest, all of us are on autopilot sometimes. I kind of wish brake lights had a three flash thing when first applied.

Rear end collisions are now the predominant accident in the USA. It doesn't take much of a brain to know why.

I wouldn't cast shade on the Maverick because it crumples in a collision. That's what it was designed to do. Sacrifice itself to protect you.

It’s always a good idea to turn on your emergency flasher when you are approaching a line of stopped vehicles or the last one in the line. It’s called covering your rear.
I discovered turning on your hazards when approaching slowing traffic the first time I drove in the UK and Germany (same trip). I don't know if it is common in Europe or unique to the time I was there.

I thought it was a good idea and have been doing it for over twenty years.

I do see others doing it once in a while.

I doubt it works when someone's nose is in a phone... 🤯

Some cars will do that automatically if you jam on the brake, which strikes me as a good idea and I wish the Maverick would do that..

OP, sorry to hear about your truck but I wonder if more than usual are being totaled due to parts availability (or lack thereof?)

I'm glad I have buttons and I don't have to touch a cell phone style screen in order to change the temperature setting on my heater.
I would hate for a cop to get all confused over what they saw.

Emergency flashers are excellent option if you are driving in stop and go with lots of Regen Braking when Brake lights are not activated. (Like when "L" button is activated or when ACC stop and go cruising!).
