I woke up to loud knocks at my door at 2:50 am this past Monday morning. It was my property manager letting me know some jackass had been driving erratically through the complex. He managed to hit the curb on the opposite side of the street then bounce over to the side I was parked on. He hit me hard enough to twist my truck in its parking spot to being anything but strait. His passenger curtain airbag deployed and the wheel on that side was toast from hitting the curb. I was livid when I found out he didn't have insurance, thinking I'm going to have to eat my entire repair.

After he was towed away I was able to see the damage. I was shocked how minor it was. The hitch got marred up a bit and the hitch cover was toast. There were a few light scuffs on the bumper. Today, I had a body shop put it on a lift and checked for any frame damage and they said everything measured perfectly.

Talk about a one and a million chance that I was hit where I was. I purchased a slightly bigger target for someone to hit in case something like this happens again. 😁

9/4/25 Update:
I ended up getting it repaired. Although it didn't look like a ton of damage, things added up quickly to the tune of $4750. My normal collision deductible is $1,000 but it drops to $500 for an uninsured motorist claim and drops even further to $200 if there is a police report in the state of Oregon, which there was. I am happy to have her back.

Actually, in this case, had the Accord hit where it did you might have actually had some further damage to your truck with the large solid hitch sticking out there.

I hear ya!

Year after I got, "Blu". Get my first (and only... sooo far) dent. Idiot left behind a paint sample stuck to my truck.. But, never scratched or broke the paint surface...
Ten years ago, I got My ONE IN A MILLION...
Driver had medical issue. Drove through three yards (left trany parts everywhere) and hit my house...
Only crushed two corner pieces of siding... 🤗

As a more extreme one-in-a-million case, my racing partner got rear-ended in his chase truck. The sedan slammed into the ball mount in the trailer hitch, which bent the ball mount slightly. He thought he was good to go, but the shock and jolt to the frame from the hit broke one of the engine mounts.

I got one of those WeatherTech BumpStep XLs. I figured it's a big enough target to protect from parking lot bumps, but it has impact-absorbing webbing underneath the step surface and is entirely plastic anyway, so it should hopefully break away in a hard enough hit.

Glad everything is okay! I sure am tired of hearing about people driving carelessly and then of course being uninsured! It happens a lot where I live and there are no consequences or at least that's how it seems. But the rest of us have to have higher rates and pay for uninsured motorist on our policies. Rant over

Go Ducks.
Doesn't Oregon have uninsured motorist coverage as part of YOUR insurance? I haven't looked through my policy for the cars registered in Oregon, but both CA and HI have that as part of the coverage for my cars in those States, so I assume that's a standard thing everywhere.

note: a study done about a decade ago discovered that nearly 40% of the cars driving on the road in CA do not have insurance coverage of any kind. Yes, that's illegal. Some States have an insurance sticker, like a license plate date sticker, that you're required to put on your car showing that it's insured and up to date. You get pulled over and ticketed if it's expired. ALL States should have that!

They do and I have that on my policy but I also didn't want to pay a deductible and have another claim on my insurance for such minor damage. I already hit a deer one month into ownership 😩

Your insurance may pursue the driver for the deductible on your behalf, and if it's anything like mine, a not-at-fault uninsured motorist claim doesn't affect rates. It might be worth messaging your insurance agent and asking a few questions.

Sue his ass anyway...figure distress, body shop charge, time off work, PTSD, PTMI (Post Traumatic Mav Impact) = $8,000. If he can't afford insurance then why was he driving ?? File as a personal not insurance.

Last question. Was he drunk ? If so add on personal property damage. I can buy you a hitch and FedEx it for around $9,800

No police on scene? Driving erratic, then crashing, at 2:50 am is 99% probability of DUI.

It's an uninsured driver.... you're suggesting extracting blood from a stone.

He was driving without insurance becuase he made a poor life decision.
Suggesting to the OP that he sue to extract money from this impoverished person who makes poor life decisions is probably an exercise in futility.

Deport that beanner with no auto insurance policy! Bet he has no DL neither
Or he could just be 'murican, born and raised here. I've been hit by good 'ol boys who didn't carry insurance.

Bad things happen. Not every misfortune is your opportunity to get a pay day. Not every law breaker needs to be penalized to the full extent of the law, criminally, nor punitively.

I guess what I'm saying is there are provisions in the law (like Oregon requiring Uninsured motorists insurance) to protect us from those who break the law and do not have the means to make proper restitutions. I'm not claiming anyone deserves a free ride.... just the reality that 'you can't always get there from here'...

Apartment manager should have called police to have the accident recorded in the event there was other damage caused on the property by the irresponsible driver that wasn't yet apparent. Police would then take the correct investigative and enforcement action (e.g. DUI breathelizer, etc..)

Really awesome the Maverick faired as well as it did! A relief not to have to involve repair shops, insurance companies, or wallets...
