After many months of looking at and comparing cat back exhaust systems I finally pulled the trigger and added the Magnaflow to my 2022 FX4. I wanted the performance gains of a cat back but I didn't want the sound of the less restrictive exhaust to be annoying. Many people have posted their opinions about adding a cat back system and I share some of those same concerns. I didn't want it to be a 4 cylinder trying to act like a V8 and I didn't want the dreaded "fart can" rattle you hear on so many Hondas and Subarus. Anyways I made a video of the install as well as some sound clips so others can hear and decide for themselves. In terms of the sound I think it is likely the most "mellow" of the current offerings out there and that was part of the reason I chose it.

Performance gains for a cat back? Nope.
There’s actually quite a lot of info out there, before and after dynos etc showing small gains (2%) with only a cat back on various vehicles. In this particular case all I can do is detail my experience. I will say I was a bit skeptical myself but there were little things that were noticeable, is it worth $700 for it in terms of ROI, no 😀

5-10% - no way. 1-2% at best.

Weight reduction and higher quality metal are the major selling points. I will put go after market when mine rusts out.

I plan to keep the tip hidden and not run a dual tip or larger tip that will contribute to unnecessary sound.

Yes this would be my assumption as well. Manufacturers say 5-10% but that is likely very inflated.

Without a dyno it’s silly to guess but I would agree and say in the 2% range, maybe 5 HP.

I’m a very consistent driver and do the same route every day, same pedal control (the acceleration I did in the video I virtually never do), the MPG definitely went up in that 2-3% (around 1 MPG) range over the last 1000 miles. Could just be due to weight savings but as explained the truck seems to be working just a tad easier. People here can take that with a grain of salt and I would feel the same way looking outside in. It’s good to be skeptical. I’m definitely not trying to make any crazy claims here and I wouldn’t say $700 is worth a 2% gain in HP or MPG but it was a fun project.

Then I went and put 30” tires on last week and lost my MPG gains and I’m back to where I started but the truck sounds cool and looks cool so that must be of some value 😅

Magnaflow is where I will start when I look. That or Borla, and again keep a single hidden tip for sound deadening.

However that will only come when the original system goes.

The first spend is going to be a Livernois tuner and S&B cold air intake.

Unless you are pulling a trailer or some other activity that requires a higher engine load or output, reducing exhaust bp will do nothing to affect fuel economy. Low airflow in equals low exhaust flow out.
At least you did it to an Ecoboost 😉👍👍
If changing the exhaust makes you happy then that’s all the justification you need.

Well the good thing is if it’s a little mild sounding, the exhaust will louden a little overtime.

The cat-back from magnaflow on my escape has a lot of rust. Cheap stainless for the pipes. The resonator, muffler, and glass pack tips haven’t rusted. Fitment was probably a 7/10.
