I went with a lariat lux because I could still comfortably afford it (it came out to around $30k) and I wanted all the modern tech and slightly upscale features it came with - adaptive cruise/lane centering (which is amazing on highway trips), heated everything (never knew how much I'd love a heated steering wheel ), leather seats, better sound system, push button start, etc.
The XLT was just too much of a lateral move from my 10 year old Mazda - if I'm plunking down all this money for a new car, I want it to feel new. Plus I'll be inclined to keep it longer if actually has up to date technology.
