The price of an XLT lux and Lariat non-lux is ~$1,500 different, so not huge. However, the features swap is substantial. The lux package on the Lariat also requires the co-pilot (lame) and is just really pricey to me.

XLT Lux
  • Heated everything
  • Remote start fob
  • Spray bed liner
  • Bunch of other goodies

Lariat non-lux
  • Smooth seats (nice for cleaning up after the kids)
  • better interior colors IMHO
  • keyless start and touch entry
  • power rear window (if you can call something that small a window)
  • acoustic windshield
I’m missing a few things but hopefully the point stands: similar price but substantially different options.
Thoughts?
If not for already having my VIN I would be changing from the XLT Lux to the Lariat base. I was originally hooked on the XLT Lux because of the heated steering wheel and seats, but now realize the push start is more important to me. Lots of pics and details have come out since I made final choices and I’m thinking I may just order another one in Lariat trim and trade for minimal difference while they are still in limited supply.

You definitely got me thinking about this. One thing I really like about my wife’s explorer is the intelligent access. That plus the upgraded interior is almost a no brainer. Plus I’ll just get a spray in liner here and get a better warranty on it.

Thanks for the post! Time to change my order!
I went for the spray bed liner, mud flaps, and rubber mats. The last two are same price as good after-market options and no labor for me this way. :)

I just removed the spray bed liner and splash guards from my Lariat. That changed my build code from 19 down to 10. :)

I haven't placed an order yet, why because I just have to have a test drive first. My car is a Outback my wife's an S80 Volvo. Big difference in style and price. I'm happy driving the Outback but when I drive the Volvo it is just so much easier to drive and much quieter.

An acoustic windshield helps a great deal. Don't dismiss the idea without a test drive. I want to drive the Lariat, if it's as comfortable and quiet as a Ridgeline, I'll get a Maverick. Yeah, I know big difference in price too. I'm geezer its my last vehicle, it has to be comfortable. Size, storage I don't care.

Agreed on the test drive. However…
It seems unlikely to get to drive on anytime soon as any dealer inventory is likely to evaporate before it shows up. If you have a particular trim and option list, then it would be nigh impossible to drive one like that under the current conditions.
I would recommend to configure one with your best guess of what you want, and then order it. If you don’t like it when it shows up and you test drive it, then don’t buy it. Any deposit should be fully refundable. And the dealer is unlikely to complain about additional inventory they can sell. That’s what my dealer told me anyway. :)

I could be wrong but i believe the priority code of 10 through 19 is purely the choice of your dealer to set. No reason it had to be 19 instead of 10 from the beginning.

No self dimming rear view mirror mirror option
No factory Navigation option
No fog light option
No self park option
I have these in my 2010 Escape.
Lariat Lux fwd sunroof will add the black wheels and sell the 18s
Will replace the front bumper for a Fx4 bumper and modify LED fog lights to fit. Carbonized Gray 37mpg
Going to trade in as soon as the PHEV Maverick is offered.
My Escape is all wheel drive, never needed it but it gets 3 or 4 miles less per gallon than a 2 wheel drive Escape. Have driven a hybrid now for the past 12 years.

For those concerned about leather/ActiveX seats, don't forget that aftermarket upgrades are an option. I'm set on the XLT Lux (I prefer a physical key and dislike the Lariat interior), but I have cats and dogs that need to ride from time to time, and leather makes all the difference.

I plan to go with Katzkin seats once I have the money saved to purchase them. You can create your own custom design/color scheme - the screenshot below is one I made to match the XLT interior.

Does anybody have experience in terms of how well the active-x seats handle medium to large dog nails?
I am worried about this too…opinions out there?

I am split on these two myself. I also think the Lariat Lux is a lot of extra $$ for not a lot extra kit, While the XLT Lux makes sense and keeps it well under 30k depending on the build. I was drawn in by its 20k starting price for a small pickup, almost unheard of pricing for what you get. I figured I would have to option it and while my preference is to keep it cheap, I'm ordering this as a sales vehicle for my job and I'm looking at a significant increase in my territory and commission. With everything I want in either a Lux XLT or a standard Lariat, its around 27-28k. Perfect. I prefer the XLT for the cloth interior and the better Lux package. I just don't like the wheels on the XLT. I get that they really made the options in such a way to kind of get you to go for the Lariat, but I don't want a leather interior, no thanks. Its easier to replace wheels if it bugs me that much, so I guess I'm likely ordering a Lux XLT.

My fiance has a Highlander Hybrid and while she is not getting the mileage she was hoping for, she is getting better mileage than a standard Highlander. I have been impressed with it. I really like its eCVT setup and how it puts power down, I thought I would hate it. I love that Toyota made all the accessories electric, saved a ton of time and headache when I replaced its timing belt. No accessories to unbolt and get out of the way, just the harmonic balancer!

It really warmed me up to hybrids, I used to look down on them. I love cars and I love manuals, but when it comes to something that I need to do a job, I need reliability first and foremost. The combined head/exhaust manifold/turbo setup on the Ecoboost is a bit worrying to me. If one of those parts fails, the whole thing is scrap? So, super expensive part that will cost a lot to replace. Nice, Ford. Compared to the two motor eCVT (way fewer things to go wrong than a regular auto trans) and the 2.5 Atkinson that has shown itself to be rock solid, its a no brainer.

Love those S80's. I've had three of them since 2000 and have never had a better driving car. Can't say as much for the S90 that replaced it.

Besides the acoustic glass, adaptive cruise and signature headlights, there's nothing else the Lariat has that I would want. Push-button start is overrated and the interior is blah.

Does the Lariat Non Lux get Remote Start FOB too? Or just from the Ford Pass app? And is there a subscription required? Any info is always appreciated.

I studied the diffs, too and prefer XLT Lux. Do not like the upholstery colors in Lariat….. would definitely have to add full coverage seat covers to Overcomer. Also, I prefer using a key ignition. I have had push start on my Nero the last 4.5 years and miss regular keyed ignition….looking fwd to returning the that option.
