Dave,

Nice write up.

I think when you move the camera to your rack you will be impressed with how much view you gain in your Wolfbox.

I have a Wolfbox G850 and originally had it mounted in my back window right passenger side which gives the maximum coverage for the lane on the right.

I ended up purchasing a second waterproof camera and extension and ran a line to the back right corner of my tonneau cover which gave me an even better view.

The problem remains with both views that it is hard to determine the distance of the vehicle behind you.

I’ve recently give a new location below the tailgate a shot.

I have temporarily mounted it at the correct height and depth so that it is protected from damage, constant rain and has clearance for when the tailgate is dropped. I’m hoping this position also reduce drops blocking the camera.

I have to reach out to some friends who 3D print as I have no idea how how to cast the contour the space to make a solid mount.

If anyone who 3D prints could tell me how to achieve this please DM as I would appreciate any help.

Hey Ryan thank you for the compliment on my write up - I did move my rear facing camera outside above my 3rd brake light , I love the view however it’s not very well protected so I found this mount for the camera that mounts on to the 3rd brake light and also provides better protection it wasn’t cheap but I feel it adds a additional layer of protection I ordered it off Amazon but you can buy directly from the “Crossroads3D“ website it’s about 10 days out so I am really looking forward to remounting it when it arrives - I have attached a few photos showing how I mounted it temporarily

Yes. I think that will make the brake light position cleaner and protected.

I may give them a shout to see if they can point me in the right now for the tailgate position.

Seeing the grill of the vehicle behind me removes the uneasiness of wondering if the car behind is going to stop soon enough.

It was a lot easier than I expected I started at the dash cam I used the OEM mirror mount verses the straps - routed wires inside black shroud above mirror to access the headliner (it pops off easy) tucked the wires as I went towards driver‘s side A Pillar popped the trim covering it carefully then routed rear camera wire and power wire behind the air bag - worked my way down the trim on the side of the dash drop into the dash cavity there with the power cord being I used the OBD II Port for power verse going to the fuse box On the passenger side

i continued lifting the trim along the bottom of the door did a little crossover at the center door post then continued under the trim across the rear door then up the door trim until I got to the top of the back seat

i worked the trim openings up to the head liner across the back glass - removed the 3rd brake light unplugged the camera and snaked the plug and cord from the outside and reconnected it and tucked it into the headliner

good luck if you decide to go this route it was pretty easy honestly

Dave
I'm a little confused, did you route the rear camera wire DOWN the A pillars, under the seats, and back UP in back? I guess I assumed it would go under or along the headliner from front to back since both the rear view mirror and 3rd brake light are at the top of the truck.

Do you mind elaborating on how you removed the trim? What tools did you use?

Same for the headliner, does the whole thing "come down" or were you just pulling it back a little? Again, what tools did you use?

I did go across the headliner above the windshield and down the A Pillar (ran it behind air bag) then continued down behind the weather seals along the door there is lots of room under the trim pieces stayed this route to the back never exiting so didn’t go under the seats by the way this was the best route to grab power using the OBD Port II located under the dash just above the hood latch on the driver’s side. once I got beyond the rear door I followed the trim around the bottom of the rear speaker the up into the headliner above the rear window and through the hole where the 3rd brake light wiring is routed.

Note I did not want to pull the headliner away between the front and the rear along the sideI wasn’t comfortable inter- acting with the headliner more than i had too

I didn’t remove the entire head liner there is enough room to pry it open just enough to tuck the wires in.

the photo is a trim tool kit I picked up on Amazon it worked great and made this job easy there are lots of different kits to choose from - hope this helps

Well I certainly hope so, the camera is approved to be mounted outside so we’ll have to see how it works out. The interior option didn’t work out since I have a cargo basket mounted on crossbars over the bed…
I'd hate to throw water on your project, but I'm wondering if putting your truck through an automated car wash would damage the cam because it's sitting above your roof line. I don't mean water damage as much as one those washing wands banging into it as it washes the roof. Is it possible to mount the cam below the cargo light/3re brake light module? Of course, if you don't wash your truck in that manner, then it would not matter.

Legit Concern Tom - I only hand wash or worst case scenario any carwash my vehicles go through are brushless so I feel this camera mount will handle that I am purposely am holding off any wash until the new bracket installation is complete, just got a delivery update it’s scheduled to arrive on 03/02 so I’m counting the days…

It should survive just as well as your shark fin antenna.

I agree I’ll definitely test it once I get it in place and probably use a little RTV Silicone around the wiring where it enters the brake light although the seal seems pretty tight

I get your point, but point of fact, the Maverick doesn't have the "shark fin" antenna. It has a regular rod antenna which I replaced with a "stubby" for the very reason I cautioned the OP about.
UPDATE: Oh, wait. I bet you meant "any" shark fin antenna and not necessarily "my" shark fin. Apologies for taking issue with your post.

I have had a dash cam for 3 years.
FYI..... after about three years the dash cam was only recording the first couple of minutes on every trip. I did not notice until I tried to download a major accident that happened in front of my car. It did not record it. I thought my cam was bad. Apparently the SD cards degrade /"wear out" in dash cams. I put in a brand new SD card and works great.
I was ignorant and thought SD cards last forever.
SD CARDS WEAROUT or DEGRADE.
Especially on dash cams.
Don't make the mistake I made.

I wasn’t aware SD Cards “wear out” I do know they frequently need to be formatted (the WolfBox G900 TriPro has a reminder that alerts you to do so)…
