Why is the license plate on the right and not on the left?

They cannot mount in the center, if it would be obscured or obstructed by a hitch, trailer mount, or other device. - Since our trailer hitch, when equipped would obstruct the new, they needed to move it either left or right, and most people look right, away from oncoming headlights at night, they chose the right.

Lots of other regulations by state, about height no less than 12", nor higher than 48", defacing, bent, etc. They've even updated the code in NJ to rule out covering the plate with plastic, glass, or any other material, as well as keeping it free of grease, grime, or other material which may keep it from being clearly legible. - We have way to many regulations.

I know this is a bit of a zombie thread but I just wanted to give the correct final answer.

Any street ricer will tell you that the license plate isn’t centered because that would block airflow to the tow hitch intercooler.

way more room for activities! Then it’s no where near exhaust or trailer stuff or dragging on departure all the time!

Probably no reason at all, some vehicles have a single exhaust pipe on the right, some on the left, same with the radio antenna, the only one that gripes me is the fuel filler should ALWAYS be on the driver's side.

They should put the fuel filler back in the back behind the plate like they used to be, That way you are equal distance from the pump regardless of which line of pumps you pull up to.

Dont buy this reason, My F150 is in the center and thtrailer I haul with it is a lot bigger than what I haul with the mavrick and it blocks the plate on my F150. Most states that have laws about tags cannot be blocked have exceptions for when pulling a trailer as you have to have a tag on the trailer and any officer can get intial information from that Tag.
