Below MSRP has always been the goal (successfully) for me for about 8 new car purchases. I can go with MSRP for the Maverick because it seems to be a very good value at that price. Paying over that, dilutes that feeling, so I would not pay over that. Everyone can pay what they want, and it is not criticism, but curious minds sometimes ask to understand the market, the economy, why things are what they are in general.

I can understand someone paying 5 grand over for a maverick if they really want it. If you want to see something that really blows your mind, just know there are people paying 600-800 grand for 30 year old 2,000 sq ft shithole homes in Salt Lake City. Guess some people really like being around homeless junkies and construction cones.
Other people are happy to provide those circumstances for you, whether you like it or not.

Not me, but someone sure is. Dealer near me seems to have a steady supply of what looks like walkaways, $5-9k add ons, they never last for long. I guess if money isn't really an issue and you really want one NOW, it makes a certain kind of sense. I'm semi-retired, heading toward retirement, so I'm holding out for my little order, but... there was a time in my life when ADM wouldn't have even made me pause. Just show me where to sign

No Way! - I actually paid nearly $5k BELOW MSRP, once it finally arrived, after nearly 18 months. Ok, so that was $2750 from the private offer, and another nearly $2k via Blue Oval Discount (D-Plan). As they say patience is a virtue.

Dealers have ultimately have shot themselves in the foot, once the used & new market adjusts, should the supply chain issues & back logs clear. They like 2-3 year repeat customers, and if you're upside down due to having paid $5k-$10k over in 2-3 years, you're sure not going to be a repeat with that upside down loan.

The maverick is the only vehicle currently on the market that checks all the boxes for me. I'm still holding out hope that I'll get scheduled soon but my only vehicle's oil/coolant system issues are getting worse and its cost me $2800 year to date in repairs. If I don't get scheduled this week I'll start looking at dealer inventory. I might be willing to pay 3K over no more. Even at that markup I might feel like I made a foolish decision so Idk. In my area (Southen Commiefornia) The lowest markup I've seen is 6k with the average around 9-10k

I have one on order but who knows if it gets built. I want a truck for light truck things. I live in the city and need to park in parking garages and the like. I want decent gas mileage. There is nothing anywhere close to the Mav in this regard. At this point, I'd probably pay $5k over. $10k is hard to swallow. But at the same time, comparing it to the other options, it's still "cheaper". I intend to keep it for 10+ years. What's the alternative here? Ford Ranger? Honda Ridgeline? They are bigger and get worse gas mileage. I don't need that. Even if I'm in Ford Ranger and Honda Ridgeline territory for price for the Maverick, I'm still highly considering it. But I hope the prices come down (for everything). I'm waiting until June/July or whatever for the end of the 2023 run here. If mine isn't built, I'll probably end up with another Mav over MSRP or a slightly used Ranger I guess.

I paid some ADM when I got my Maverick (an abandoned '22 First Edition Hybrid). And I'm normally THAT guy when it comes to negotiating for a new vehicle. I've never paid even MSFP on any vehicle I've purchased. I walked out of a Chrysler dealership with my entire family when we went to pick up a new minivan, and the dealership pulled some last-minute BS to jack up the price by $500. My poor little boy was crying his eyes out. By the time we got home, the dealer called to say they would meet my price. But since they had tried to screw me, and made my little boy cry, I got them down another $500. The sales rep told me he had to chip in half his commission (probably BS) to get the sales manager to agree.

But these are extraordinary times. I started looking for a Maverick in June of 2022 - long after the '22 order window was closed, and quite a while before the '23 order window would open. I called every dealer within 150 miles of me for a Maverick that met my specs (a rejected order), and got on their "waiting list." Then I called every dealer within 100 miles of where my son lives, plus every dealer within 100 miles of where my brother lives. I told them all exactly what I was looking for, and got on their "waiting list"...

I got 3 calls over the next four-five months, and each dealership was up-front in stating there would be ADM added to the order. All of them were asking between $10K and $15K for the hybrid, but most told me they did $5K less if I would take a comparably equipped Ecoboost model. However, none of those three was equipped as I wanted (Hybrid Lariat with ACC, and preferably orange, red, or Area 51 color).

When the order window for '23 opened up, I placed my order that very morning, but my dealer had at least 15 others on order by the time I got my order in their system (Some salesman took "pre-orders" and started entering them the moment the system came up - a practice not "allowed" by the dealership - they wanted the customer "in house" when the order was placed. As an aside, he's no longer working there.) My sales rep (a really good guy who knew his stuff about the Maverick) warned me a few days later that it would likely be a long wait, and that there was a risk of not getting one at all in 2023. He told me they took 70+ Maverick orders during those 4 days, and more than 60 of those were for hybrids. He had no clue how many allocations they would receive...

By 9/20/22 when the order window closed, dealerships had recorded WAY more than twice as many hybrid orders as Ford publicly stated they planned to produce. My "national" odds for a '23 were now less than 40%. My "dealership odds" were closer to 15%, since they took almost 85% hybrid orders vs Ecoboost.

I came to the conclusion that if I wanted a Maverick before 2024, I was probably going to have to pay ADM to get it. But the same "weird" market that drove Maverick prices way above ADM was also driving used vehicle prices up to pretty ridiculous levels as well... My 2015 Chevy 2500HD diesel truck with almost 50K miles on it sold for only $100 less than the "out the door" price I had paid new 5 years earlier. And my hail-damaged 2012 Prius C with almost 150K miles on it was now worth $8000 to CarMax. I had offered the car to a friend for $2000 a few years ago, and he turned it down.

So I took some of the "profit" from selling those two vehicles, and bought my current Maverick - a '22 First Edition Hybrid in Area 51 - when a local dealer called to tell me the guy who ordered it had bailed. I gave him a deposit over the phone. By the time I got to the dealership, several people had come in to see it, and at least one lady tried to get my salesman (who had both keys in his desk at this point) to take $2000 under the table to sell the car to her for the same price I had agreed to pay. Whether because he knew I was already on my way to the dealership or not, he declined. (The guy in the next booth heard that exchange - that's how "excited" the lady was...)

I paid cash, so no "upside down" financing. Right now, I could take it to CarMax and get what I paid for it. In July/August when my "miraculous" now-scheduled order is likely to be delivered, I have no idea what the truck will be worth. I may "lose some money" on it, if I only look at the Maverick transaction in isolation. But when I consider the entire "vehicle budget" as a whole, I'll still be WAY ahead because of the extra money I got for the other two vehicles.

Am I rationalizing this purchase? Of course, I am. No one can make a financial case for buying a new vehicle - with the exception of ultra-rare exotic cars that have very limited production (the "McLaren Senna" being one such supercar that probably sells used for 2X what it sold for new). But it's my money, so my decision. I do have to say, I'm loving my Maverick!

I'm 71 years old and MSRP has always been the target for me. Some years ago, you could still buy for less than MSRP. It's a free world, but I'm not going to participate in the $5,000 to $10,000 over! No wonder inflation is out of control.
Dealer greed isn't inflation because it's a choice whether you want to support it. 😉

All I can say is if you compare the maverick to anything else in the marketplace currently even the “extra” people are paying is still a lot less than many other vehicles. Also people were getting much higher trade in price (so they can justify paying extra). I myself didn’t and would not, & have never even paid msrp (even this time). however even a slight increase might be less than msrp increases by ford? I’ve never seen a market like this, it’s just plain crazy times especially in the used car markets. I don’t even have a problem with anyone who sold making profit - even the dealers (unless they try making money off a signed customer contract order like I have heard on this forum).

Dealer not to far from me Basil Ford Niagara falls NY has several Mavericks about 10 K over msrp. All new. I am guessing they are screwing customers on orders and they are refusing so they then have these to sell on their own. Scummy dealer. BUT it seems to be working for them. The weird thing is about 3 months ago I got a flyer from them selling Bronco Sports about 1.5 k under msrp at least shown in the mailer they sent me.

As far as dealers shooting themselves in the foot. I am not so sure. Most people dont buy a new car that often so unless they find some review site to rate dealers HOW do they know there a rip off dealer. An old guy from one of my clubs bought his Maverick from Basil dealer I mention. He is in his mid 80's and I believe they ripped him good. He mentioned some extended warranty at super high price 3 k plus. But I don't want to make the guy feel bad so I never asked what he paid. I am sure well over msrp. Ripping off old people is scummy.

I got lucky and paid msrp. I also know this truck is disposable and will be worth 5k$ someday.

Just curious the mentality and reasoning of these mark ups and who is actually paying them. I understand and totally aware of dealers asking several grand over MSRP on " abandoned " orders...

But seeing so many posts of folks that sold their trucks to carmax or carvana or just back to the Ford dealer etc... For 5-10 grand over MSRP in many cases, which means the buying dealer is going to mark it up additionally another few grand.... It just puzzles me, who is wanting one of these trucks that bad that they would pay what could be well over 10 grand over MSRP on one of these.

I feel like I have wanted one myself pretty bad, but I also really don't want one at a price point any higher than MSRP. I have multiple orders pending, a XLT trim level and a Lariat trim level... One is a little under 30 grand, the other is close to 35 grand. I don't see these trucks being worth any more than that. I understand that a new F150 or even Ranger is a ton more, but to me they are far more substantial vehicles ( and over priced at that ). But I can't wrap my head around paying over 30 grand for a used XL or over 40 grand for a used XLT. Even paying those prices for new ones someone else backed out on, I start to think of what other vehicles I could purchase for that same sum of money and it is a LONG list of far better vehicles.

But clearly there is a market for Mavericks at 5-10 grand over MSRP or else we wouldn't be seeing these high offers being given...

Following auctions on Cars and bids, seems like vehicles like the Riven trucks and lightnings, broncos etc... The market has softened and these trucks are rarely selling for over MSRP now. Heck, even the last few Mavericks sold there barely went for over MSRP.

IDK.... lot's of thoughts go through my head when I think of all this. I don't know what to think. I mean, are these trucks that special that people really think they are still a good buy at WAY over MSRP? Or is this just a sign of American excess, where some folks just simply want one bad enough that they will pay whatever they have to pay to get one? Or is it something else?
Bought my 2023 Lariat Tremor for msrp, not paying anymore than that.

My only problem with so many people paying over MSRP is that it makes it more the norm. It is additional inflationary tendencies allowing Ford to raise the actual MSRP and more dealers to attempt more ADM on even special order vehicles.

Two pages, and 29 posts. Only one response to the OP's actual question of "Who is paying 5-10K over MSRP, and why"... If you didn't pay over MSRP, then don't chime in. Create your own thread to rant about "dishonest dealers" and "this truck isn't worth MSRP, much leas over"... (Or just add your comments to the dozen or so that already exist for that purpose.) Sheesh!
