Difference in air inlet sizes. I want to keep my cold air inlet, but want it to flow as much as it can with the factory filter that filters better than the K&N

I had mine apart & was wondering the same thing. Maybe those 2 'ports' are to attach test equipment. I also ran with both of those plastic pieces removed & found it felt slightly stronger under full throttle, but the engine would not get up to operating temp with it removed. The only explanation is that the incoming air temp is partially used to open & close the shutter system in front of the radiator to control engine temp & when sucking air from under the hood the temp is higher signaling it should open them to cool the engine more.
