The gas engine IS coupled to the transmission through the E-CVT. it's not much of a generator to recharge the battery. The ICE and electric motors work alone or together depending on the actual engine load and available battery charge. The dash gages are very simplified, with the EV coach display being a little better in providing relative information, but it won't give you specifics.

I use a live engine scanner to monitor the battery amps in and out, as well as the engine rpm and load. In general:

Electric only mode if the battery charge is > 40% +/- and the amps pulled are below ` 80 +/- amps. Once the battery charge drops OR you step on the go-pedal and you pull more amps, the ICE starts up.

The ICE continues until the load on the ICE is < 40% +/- AND your battery charge is > 40%. Drive with a light touch and you gen go all-electric until the charge on the battery drops low.

When the ICE is running, sometimes the electric motor will draw some amps to supplement the ICE, and sometimes the ICE will provide a little - charge current back to the battery with the electric motor off . When driving, almost ALL the BIG recharge current comes from the regen braking( over 130 amps!). Everytime you regen (or drive in L and take your foot off the gas) the battery gets some juice back.

In practice, the battery runs from around 40% charge up to 70% or so. I've never seen the battery below 20% nor above 80%.

I wouldn't try to 2ng-guess Ford. Looks to me like they've got the whole ICE/electric thing tuned for best performance AND best efficiency.

Screen shots show my mav at idle. -amps = charging, +amps = pulling power from battery (to run accessories AND/OR the electric drive motors)

pointless to try and get more mpg out of a hybrid ice engine, it's not designed like a typical ice motor.
You’ve got to be kidding me. The whole point of a Hybrid is to maximize the mpg (miles per gallon of GAS).

The Atkinson in the Toyota Hybrid is the world’s best - highest compression, highest efficiency, port & direct injection, etc etc.

EV’s measure range. Ice vehicles measure mpg. Hybrids measure mpg too. Mpg of your Atkinson.

unfortunately you're wrong the Atkinson engine isn't very efficient at all! lol

y'all need to watch the video and learn how Hybrids work

Watch the video if you really want to know how Hybrids work

Watch this video if you want to understand world class Atkinson ICE. But in the long run, Hybrids will be replaced by ultra efficient lawn mower range extenders on EVs (for those folks afraid of EV only).

bro you just proved my point trying to prove me wrong lol The video I shared is on the same engine! 🙄

watch the video I shared if you want to learn something

The only stupid/asinine question is the one you don’t ask.
my time as a professor taught me that while there may be no stupid questions, there are questions that sow that you didn't think before asking . . .

By “efficient”, I am referring to thermal efficiency. This is the benchmark for measuring the efficiency of an ICE.

Toyota’s Atkinson reaches up to 41%, one of the highest for any production gas engines.

The Ford Atkinson is rated 37% to 40% thermal efficiency. Not too shabby.

The Ford 2.0 ecoboost is rated at 32% to 36% efficient as a comparison.

The Toyota Atkinson gets the best mpg’s, followed by the Ford Hybrid with the EB far behind;)

edit - China recently unveiled an incredibly efficient engine that is being used in Chinese hybrids. Very ingenious!

He actually tries to make the point the Atkinson is efficient, and the main reason for good MPG.

I'm thinking he's limited by the big van he's looking at. Maybe in that case compared to regular version ICE only van.

I've not found the Atkinson live mpg to be that great at slower speeds where there is no Traction Motor assist. I actually see better mpg on the slower highways 60 mph still without TM assist.

When the gas engine does not have to recharge the battery....

~45 MPG at 60 MPH all day long

However counterintuitive... P&G pulse & glide works so well because it is more efficient to burn gas and propel and recharge at the same time at 30 MPG for 30 seconds, then "glide" with engine off for 30 seconds or more. Repeat.

If the engine has 38% thermal efficiency while running, you can boost that a lot for your trip average by having the engine off a good chunk of the time.

No waste heat when you're not buring any fuel.

It's not really important when one is running or the other, but rather making the most efficient use of both and using the ICE during its most efficient duty cycles. The Atkinson engine wouldn't jump off the line but it's great fuel economy highway cruising, That's why you need a boost. Creeping, Stopping and going in traffic is inefficient with and ICE, So for a period of time you're stopping and going without the ice. And then using it to charge and in an efficient RPM. That's what all the programming is about.
Depends on how much of a lead foot you are. Easy on the throttle means you're in electric mode more, getting better efficiency and miles per gallon.

Just watched this video last night that did a pretty good job explaining how and when then ICE and electric motors work.
