When the "oil life remaining" reaches 10% or one year whichever happens first.

I have had my Hybrid Maverick about two months and have only driven 685 miles and used 8% of the "oil life" so it seems likely that I will do it mid December 2022.

Can 5W20 snyblend be used for this motor? I know it calls for 0W20 full syn, but I cannot find Motorcraft 0W20 around here. Is Ford's 0W20 new which is why no one is carrying it yet?

Ford Boss Me on youtube just did a video on the Hybrid and he recommended the first change at 1000 mi with the subsequent OCI at 5000 mi. He is a Ford Master tech and has put out some real good videos pertaining to oil including lab analysis.

I'll be driving my Maverick over 2,000 miles from the dealership to home. Was thinking about trying to plan a dealership visit around the 1,000 mile mark but I didn't know about the oil life sensor. Might wait until I get back home.

Don't worry about Motorcraft 0w20, if you can't find it, any synthetic 0w20 will do. I usually get Motorcraft, only because its usually cheaper than other full synthetics. In my CMax, I've run Castrol, Mobil 1 and even (don't laugh) Amazon Basics. Change every 7,500mi since day 1 and not a speck of sludge.

Amazon Basics Full Synthetic Motor Oil, SN Plus, 0W-20, 1 Quart, 6 Pack

Shortly after they build it, and I get to drive it.

Wow! You could double that in a hybrid, and still remove good oil. .

The original oil is not Synthetic for a reason, if you switch to Synthetic to early (before the rings are fully seated) you could, end up with an engine that uses oil. I plan on doing a Oil Filter swap early and just top off the factory oil. I'll do a full oil change at 5K miles or so.

Ford's 0w20 isn't new. I used it in a Ford C-Max 7 years ago. You don't have to use Motorcraft brand oil at all. You just need to use a WSS-M2C962-A1 spec oil to technically preserve the warranty.

Yes you can use 5w20, no problem, but I wouldn't use it if it gets colder than about 10F outside. The "zeroW" part of the 0w20 means it does flow better when it's pretty cold. 5w20 flows about the same down to around 10F when significant differences begin to appear in viscosity as it gets colder.

The "20" part of both 0w20 & 5w20 means they perform the same when warm or hot.

One caveat: Ford could potentially, maybe, void the warranty if you use 5w20 instead of the officially accepted 0w20, if you were to have an oil-related engine problem. About half the precedents (stories) for this say, yes, they will check what you used if there is a problem, and half I've heard say they will just look to see if the oil is reasonably clean and full enough. .......... And they technically expect you to use a 0w20 that also says " WSS-M2C962-A1 " on the back of the bottle or jug. Most 0w20 oils have the WSS spec, but not all do.

So, for good lubrication, really any 0w20 or 5w20 you see on the shelf that is API certified will be adequate. If using a non-full-synthetic 5w20, then try not to leave it in for the full 1-year/10,000 mile duration, but instead change it out every 6 months or 7500 miles. A full-synthetic 5w20 can be left in for the 10k-mile full duration.

I'm picky about what oil I put in, so I will demand the use of 0w20 WSS-M2C962-A1 oil that also carries the very tough Mercedes MB 229.71 spec since it has been torture tested. Castrol 0w20 Extended in the gold bottles or jugs at Walmart or Amazon is the only oil that carries both the Ford & Merc spec. BTW, Amsoil Signature Series is very good, but only by reputation, not actual certifications, which works fine in my opinion in this case.

By the way, 90% of all the 0w20 oil available is full-synthetic (Group3 or 4 base oil). A few syn-blend (Group2 with 3 or 4 added) 0w20's are there, but I never see them. Pennzoil has one, I never see it on the shelf, and Honda's house brand 0w20 used to be a syn-blend, possibly not anymore. (Most oil makers going for "cheap" just use Group3 base oil in a 0w20 weight & meet NOACK specs with a minimum of plastic VII chemicals and anti-ox, that works for them.) I don't know what base oils (syn-blend vs. full syn) the factory installs, but it doesn't matter at all for break-in what it is.

The viscosity comparison graph below has temperature on the horizontal axis in Celsius, so -12.2 C = +10 F to convert. Also, 0C = 32F.

Note how the 0w-20 (full syn Mobil1) begins to get a significant difference in viscosity around -12C (+10F). Any warmer, and the diff is negligible for engine performance.

Comparing to Mobil1 full-syn 5w-20 and their cheaper syn-blend 5w-20. Both 5w-20's are about the same viscosity as it gets colder. Extra unwanted waxes in syn-blends don't get dominant until it gets colder, about -15F or so, BTW.

Warm viscosity is spec'ed by the "20" number, and there is no diff between 0w-20 & 5w-20, seen converging on the right side of the graph.

Yes you can use 5w20, no problem,
Ford has been known to change specs... My C-Max oil fill cap said 5W20 in October 2012, using synthetic blend. A year later, oil caps said 0W20.

Google fails me when I search for API viscosity standards, which I've seen in the past. They show that there's a huge degree of overlap between 0W- and 5W- oil viscosity specification tolerance. As a result, many synthetic 5W20 oils also met the 0W20 specs when they were released.

Changed my VERY early. It was easy, compared to just about any car I've ever done. I didn't even use a jack or ramps, just crawled under (on top of a piece of cardboard!).

Switched to a Goldplug AP-04 neodymium magnet drain plug to catch iron particles, and an over-sized oil filter (Fram Ultra XG3600). Turns out, at least on the Hybrid, there's plenty of room for the longer oil filter. I put an XG3600 on a C-Max Hybrid a while back and I had to "stretch" the fibrous splash guard a bit to get it to fit, which is not ideal. No such issue on the Maverick Hybrid. I don't know if the Ecoboost Mav engine has room for the bigger filter; probably does I'd guess.

--- The factory oil filter was super-short. Not even as big as a Motorcraft FL910S off-the-shelf OEM one you might get.

--- The picture below shows the height comparison (Shaquille O'neal vs. Danny Devito) between an XG3600 (4.9") and an oil filter the same size as an FL910S (3.4").
Not pictured, the factory oil filter was even tinier, probably about 2.9". (The green oil filter below is the same size as the FL910S, 3.4".)

--- An XG3600 has the best 4548-12 filtering test results of any I've ever seen, and will last much longer than a FL910S or about anything else you can put on there.
