This may be related to something that happened to a relative's Mav.

They bought a hybrid that they tow behind their motor home. After the first tow (under 1K miles I believe), they unhooked and started it up to move it and quickly found they had no brakes, then it started throwing some messages about the battery. Turns out there are some settings that must be made along with it being in neutral when towing.

Essentially what ford said happened, was they towed it and the system was applying the brakes to maintain charge and it ate up the pads and also jacked up the battery. Ford did help them out and I think they were only out of pocket a few hundred.

So maybe there is something that can be easily set/unset when rolling through a carwash?

Yes.
It's in the directions and also the truck reminds you on the fly.

You press L after shifting to N and you get 30 minutes to complete your car wash. Then the brakes come on.

So don't do this when towing behind a motorhome which needs a whole separate procedure.

When using a Tunnel Car Wash.
The only thing you have to do is put your Maverick in neutral, keep *your foot off the brake, don't touch the steering wheel.
You do not have to put it in L.

This implies that you are in the truck.

Depends.

You DO if you exit the vehicle.

You do NOT if you stay in the vehicle.

Very True.
I don't care to get wet so I stay in my Maverick and keep the doors and windows closed 😁

Truth be told, I have never gotten out of a vehicle using a Tunnel Car Wash. I don't care for some stranger sitting in my vehicle, going through the glove compartment and the console, while smearing up the interior glass🙁
