When Ford opened orders, I reached out to two nearby dealers about ordering. I only ended up going through the ordering process with one of the dealers and got DORA (Dealer order receipt acknowledgement). I never mocked up or even speced out a truck from the second dealer because the first dealer was so much better informed on what to expect than the second.
My order from the first dealer has been shipped!

Today, I just got ANOTHER email "Your 2025 Maverick XLT has been built and is currently awaiting shipment" - different VIN and Order Number. When I track it, I learned that it's from the second dealership. I didn't place an order with them. I don't have any other emails from them about an order. The only email I've gotten from Ford is this one that my truck is being built.

Questions:
Is there any risk to me that they appeared to have placed an order without my consent or involvement? Is there a risk to my credit somehow?
I don't want to call them and ask- because I think they're using me to game their allotment. I didn't go with them to begin with because they seemed much less on the up and up - and I'm glad I didn't.

Or, am I just being paranoid?

I would call them and ask when my vehicle is coming in to see if they realize you know what they did. Call them out on it. If you left no money or gave them personal info there no harm either way.

Sounds like they might be trying to game the system. I wouldn't be surprised if they are using your info as a "customer order" since stock orders aren't open yet. I bet they don't have any expectation that you'll actually buy the truck, but they know some random customer will want it.

There's no risk to you because you can always walk away from any order. But it does sound like they are using your personal information to cheat the system and get a truck on the lot they can sell to someone, before their dealer order allocations become available. I would call Ford at
800 334-43750 and report exactly what happened.

When dealerships pull this, it delays legitimate customers from getting trucks they ordered. I would hope Ford cuts this stealership's allocations for gaming the system in this way.

Are our trucks still selling for over sticker? I ask because when I ordered my 22 back in 21 dealers were marking up abandonEd orders by five or $10,000 so it seemed like that was a pretty good racket for them…

My guess that there's a small window where there's a surge in demand for every new model year. And, if dealers can't sell their existing inventory, they're anxious to get some '25s. And, being able to sell a truck at MSRP with no incentives motivates some questionable behaviors.

My dealership doesn't do a markup on ordered Mavericks. And I know they definitely don't get them in for allotment retail like they do everything else that doesn't sell as well, So like other people have noted here they are probably hoping to claim it as an order and then mark it up or add it to retail allotment. I think they get dinged if they keep putting in orders that people don't take either?. But in either case, they are either taking away a truck from someone who would like to order one and get it sooner or marking them up.

So, contact (in person) the second dealer who ordered you a vehicle without your consent. Ask to talk with the manager and tell him you did not place an order. (don't say ANYTHING about your order from 1st dealership). Tell manager you are interested in possibly taking procession of the Maverick, but you are feeling inclined to call Ford with a complaint about how this transaction transpired, and you are not happy about that. However, if he, the local manager is so inclined to make a very good deal, perhaps the call to Ford would not happen. After all,, you can tell him you don't want any trouble for his dealership (heh heh). Get the BEST deal you can and if good then take delivery of truck when it arrives and now you have TWO Mavericks. Sell one you like the least, keep the profits and go on a nice Caribbean cruise!

Your second dealer is scamming Ford, and is ordering it in your name but it will be put into their lot inventory. You want to stay away from that scummy dealership.

Maybe it was just a simple paperwork mistake from the person you originally spoke with at the dealership.
Nothing nefarious indended.
On the positive, you now may have a choice of vehicles to choose from. (y)

I did order one and was told that even though I ordered it, I can walk away from the agreement because that model truck is in such demand that it will sell regardless. I wouldn't worry about it.
