Using a 2x6 a 2x4 or 2x10 did not solve MY issue of too little room between the board and the tailgate.

. I found the 15" of storage space from the board to the tailgate to be inadequate for our shopping needs. My design gives 27 inches of storage area. The same area my wife's Escape has between the backseat and tailgate.
I didn't like having to bend across the tailgate in order to pull items out of the back. I can pull the whole tray to me once.
And if I need the full bed. I pull out the side brackets and the front portion lies down and I can use the whole bed and have nothing to store.

A lot more room and nothing rolls forward.

That is what I was thinking. I had 200lbs of weight on a piece of plywood that became tough to push. Then I found a scrap of 1 inch diameter steel pipe 30 inches wide that made it simple to roll. Been scratching my head for a low level roller attached to a design like yours.

I realize when I made the tray. If I attached any casters or rollers, when pulling the tray out they would catch on the tailgate Gap. I ended up attaching strips of carpeting on the bottom of the wood.

What type of carpet anything special? With a spray in bed liner it might create enough friction to chew up the carpet.

Well it wasn't Berber.
Scraps of carpeting I had left over and stapled it to the bottom of the tray.
If the carpeting gets wore down you replace it.

Don't overthink it. KEEP IT SIMPLE.

Have to agree with you. I do way too much thinking and not enough doing.

You have to do what works for you.
If a piece of 2x6 works, use that.
For me having just 15" of storage area between it and the tailgate wasn't enough. Especially if I pick up a couple bags of salt when we're grocery shopping.
When you compare these two pictures. You can see how much more I can put in that area and still have it secured from sliding to the front of the bed.

I cut and used the metal frame from a discarded I think? election sign.
With the tray pushed all the way in the wheel wells brace the brackets.
When I want to fold it flat and I pull it out, then pull the brackets out and lay it down.
Simple and cheap.
As a matter of fact the paint I used was on the discounted racket Home Depot $5.
