recently purchased a 2024 Ford Maverick hybrid. we understood that we could tow up to 2000 pounds. Our Bass boat weighs 1800 pounds so we thought all was good. Our sales person just responded to our question of how much weight can we put in the truck and still pull 2000 pounds. she said the 2000 pounds rating includes the boat and trailer and any weight you put in the truck. That seems to be a problem. Does anybody else understand it that way? The cargo rating for the truck is 1500 pounds I think but that’s not necessarily assuming you’re pulling a trailer.

A vehicle's GCWR is a specific weight determined by the manufacturer to be the maximum weight of a loaded tow vehicle and its attached loaded trailer. The total weight of the tow vehicle and trailer should never exceed the manufacturer's listed GCWR [source: Ford Motor Company].

GCWR for a 24 Hybrid is 6,045 lbs (this included passengers and anything you have in the truck)

Ok, so 6045 - 3545 -1800 = 700 lbs available for all accessories, cargo and passengers? Feel free to check that math.

The dealer mispoke about how payload in the truck affects tow rating. The tongue weight of the trailer comes out of payload(passengers and stuff in the bed).

Lets say your boat and trailer weigh 2000lbs and assume 10% weight on the hitch (200lbs). You are at max tow weight and have 1300lbs left in payload for you, family cooler etc.

Your actual payload is on your door sticker probably not the full 1500lbs unless it is a bare bones xl.

All that said you are really pushing the limit. Is 1800lbs the dry weight of the boat? Does that include a full tank of gas and whatever else might be in there? How far do you typically tow the boat and what type of terrain.

I must ask: does your trailer have brakes? If yes, you can add a trailer brake controller to your Maverick for reasonable cost and little effort.

Ford is REALLY saying, you can tow up to 2000 lbs, as factory equipped, that is, without trailer brakes, because your hybrid did not come with a brake controller. Towing more, within reason, is perfectly safe and sane with powered trailer brakes.

As for payload, as said above, the "tongue weight" the weight of the hitch pushing down on your truck only, lessens your payload by that amount. Not the total weight of the trailer.

Also, Ford knows, any vehicle in motion MUST have a driver. So actually, a little known and rarely discussed fact is: the first 300 pounds of "people" are not included in the cargo carrying capacity. Officially. But they are glad most people don't know this, so the average person will stay under the limit by counting all people weight.

This is similar to:
Your speed is always slower than indicated on the speedometer.
Your gas tank is always larger than advertised.
They want you to change oil & air filters sooner than needed.
And is all consistent with "better be safe than sorry".

In short, tow your boat.
And unless you are hauling steel beams, bricks, or over 100 gallons of water at the same time, you will probably run out of space in your truck, before you run out of weight carrying capacity.

Enjoy your truck!

A few will disagree, the majority will agree with this:

Don't get out a scale and pocket calculator.

Look at your loaded setup and use good judgement. (Don't trust your judgement? Then get a second opinion from someone else there, looking at your "stuff".)

Does the truck look overloaded?

Is it sagging badly in the back or just a little?

THE FACT IS: It is hard to overload with general belongings, such as vacation supplies. What is easy to overload is bulk solid materials like dirt, gravel, rocks, sod, bricks, cement bags, stuff like that. Stuff that is heavy and dense for you to lift in the first place.

honestly 1800lbs is really not that much weight to be towing. Just send it, you'll be fine.

Tow Rating = the maximum weight of the loaded trailer
Payload = the maximum weight carried by the truck (passengers + cargo + tongue weight)
GVCW = the maximum combined weight of the loaded truck (passengers + cargo) plus the loaded trailer weight

The salesperson is an idiot and is mixing and matching.

I tow my boat that weight is 1700 pounds. Add in stuff, trailer and a tank of gas and its probably over the limit by a smidge. The Mav Hybrid pulls, turns, and stops without issue. I don't drive long distances as my local lake is 12 miles away, but I am confident i the truck's capabilities.

I'm not sure this is correct. The trailer's tongue weight should be deducted from the truck's Payload. The kerb weight of the Truck includes a full tank of gas.

That may be true for the truck itself, but when I was headed out to the South Dakota black hills a few years ago along I-90 (80mph speed limit and temps above 100F), there were quite a few campers which were on the side of the road with ruined tires. There were tire failures on all types of trailers, whether pop-up, towed, or even 5th wheel. Now whether the campers were overloaded, or the (usually cheap and/or old/worn/neglected) tires just gave out with the severe 80+mph at high temps, there's still the issue of making sure your trailer is safe for the expected weight and travel conditions. I would never tow anything on the highway for any lengthy distance without quality trailer tires that I'd carefully checked beforehand, and also would make sure I'm truly not overloading the capacity of all aspects of my rig.

Yes. All good observations.
Heat will be reduced with added air pressure, up to the SIDE WALL rating of the tire. As weight goes up, the contact patch with the ground gets bigger. Added pressure can keep the contact patch, and heat generated, more consistent with what an unloaded tire would be.
