Hi All -

New 2024 Lariat Eco-Boost owner here. Am interested in Ford's tonneau options. I really don't want to go after-market and don't want to install myself unless I can be very persuaded otherwise. As part of my purchase, the dealership is offering me a break on the unit and installation.

Any feedback on all 3 options Ford offers? I'm particularly interested in the soft roll-up IF it's reasonably good at keeping rain out of the bed. Would like to hear input on all 3 Ford tonneaus.

Thanks!

Hi Larry,
I ordered the Trucklet with the Ford soft trifold. Big mistake for me. I do lots of highway miles and it flops around quite a bit. I “tempered” that a bit with some Velcro strips, but it’s still not great. It does leak a bit too, but not bad at all. I expected worse.
For lots less money I would go with aftermarket. Most of them are really easy to install from what I’ve seen. If this one ever tears I will get a hard trifold. If the mounting is the same as what I have, it’s a very easy install and removal takes a couple of minutes.
Some here like the rollups, but for me it’s so easy to remove mine I will stick w the trifold style.

Good Luck!
Charlie

Well, keep in mind the ones offered by ford as accessories are not made by ford, their the same covers available from aftermarket suppliers with maybe a ford emblem or sticker on them. With dealers pricing and install charges, even discounted, you can probably get one installed by the aftermarket dealer at a lower price.

Each type, rollup, trifoild, soft, hard, etc. has their pros and cons. There are untold numbers of threads/post on this forum related to the subject. Might be good to search and read all the different opinions and decide what best fits your use case, etc.

Not sure where you are - had soft covers on several of my Rangers, they were an absolute PIA when the weather turned cold. Agonized over a hard tri-fold as fully open they cover the back window. Then I realized that if you were hauling anything that required it to be open, the back window would be covered anyhow. Made the switch to a hard tri and have no complaints. (y)

I have the hard tri-fold and I'm thrilled with it so far. Very little water gets in. I just made a 500-mile drive, and of course there was no buffeting from wind.

I have the ford branded soft rollup cover (it was also the only one available when i got my truck in october 2021). If the cover is centered properly and tightened securely should be fine, but i don't believe any tonneau covers are absolutely leak free. I also live in Michigan w/o any complaints using in the winter.

  • I recommend avoiding soft covers.
  • Outside of health/mobility issues a good hard folding can be put on/taken off in under a minute.
  • Ford doesn't make their cover, it is an after-market that they sell directly at a fairly inflated price. So you aren't avoiding anything.
  • If you get a hard folding get one that folds up against the rear window, a true tri-fold.
One of the advantages of a tonneau cover is the ability to take it off and put it back on easily. If the cover is making that difficult then it isn't that great of a cover.

With that said, I purchased a Gator from @Realtruck and it fits incredibly well. It was also substantially less than others.

I have the hard roll up cover and I like it. It fits flush and looks good. It's also pretty secure too.

I've had the Truxedo Lo Pro Soft Roll Up Tonneau Cover for 3 years now and so far no problems. Still looks and functions as good as the day I installed it. Minimal flapping at highway speeds and fairly water tight but not 100% especially in the front corners.

Overall I've been very happy with it but 3 years ago the price was considerably less. I can't believe it's almost $600 now......wow. I like it a lot but I don't know if I would pay that much for it today.

Over the years I've owned many different tonneau covers whether soft, hard, and are folding, as well as solid one piece fiberglass. Your best bet at keeping water out is extra weather stripping around the tailgate opening.

You can generally get a bag of weather stripping for the tailgate for $30 or less on Amazon, and taking your time to install it in the right spots will help keep the extra water from intruding during rain and car washes.

Someone mentioned to check out similar threads. That's a good idea.

have a 24 with the trifold that I ordered with the truck. So far, so good. Not noticed water leaking when raining. Hand washing and rinsing with hose, very little leakage. Driven thru the same car wash twice... Once barely any water in, the 2nd, quite wet inside... Not sure why....
