Other than cost and MPG are there any issues (benefits) gained by using 89 or 91 octane gas?
The debate over octane will go on forever and there are valid arguments on both sides. For me it isn't octane that drives the issue but ethanol. Only gas I can get in my area with out ethanol is 91 octane and while I get a couple MPG better with it the additional 75 cents a gal doesn't pencil out as cost effective but I plan on having my truck for a long time and in my experience not contaminating it with ethanol is worth the extra cost!

I would like to see a huge difference in regular and high test for the cost differential, but last 3 fillups have been high test with no confirmed positive benefits.

I wonder more about the mixing of Shell and Chevron gas additive, (two different top tier formulas)

The military wrote in requirements many years ago requiring that all available fuels and oils be able to be freely mixed with that from other manufacturers. In the case of top-tier fuels, they are all using one of three amine-based detergent additives that mix with each other well. However, while Chevron uses amines in all of their fuel grades, I believe that Shell only puts them in their highest octane fuel, leading to the conclusion that Chevron may be better fuel.

Not talking about $; will the engine run better with a higher octane? Will long term maintenance issues be reduced. Or are there no real benefits other than a small gain in HP?
Yes

Hybrid engine has different timing and resulting compression than eb. Therefore lower octane can be used.

VVT adjusts for lower octane, I use it sometimes in my Ranger with no pinging, higher octane is cleaner burning.

A long time ago in a galaxy far away, I did a pretty darn scientific gas test with an old Toyota and found that one brand of gas provided enough better mileage to justify its higher price. In my mind, MPG Vs. Cost is the only way to gauge the value of different brands or different octanes of gas.

I'm not going to own the Mav long enough to know or care how things will turn out 300,000 miles from now.

I just filled up with regular gas, but I think 500 miles from now I'll fill up with Priemum for a tank or two and see what effect that has on my MPG. If it's not a financial gain, I'll be right back to regular gas. In really round numbers, premium gas is about 5% more expensive than regular, and if my mileage doesn't go up at least 5% then I'm back to regular gas.
