As an old car guy Ive had plenty of throttle stuck over the years. Some on efis with worn throttle cables, some with jammed pedal linkage, but mostly its carbs with a throttle spring lost or the linkage going past center and sticking.

No matter how it happens, always go for neutral, unless you want to end up on someones youtube channel of fails. Modern engines have a rev limiter and it will just bounce of that till you've had time to pull over and shut it down. Fighting with the throttle against the brakes is just asking for a total loss of stability situation. Neutral Neutral Neutral!

I know this sounds off the wall but yesterday I had a very scary incident with my truck.

I was in two lane traffic, right lane
I moved to the left lane to pass said cars in right lane
I pushed the throttle to accelerate
I took my foot off the throttle and throttle remained at the same level. It did not left off.
I mashed my brakes as the engine whined and was pulling me forward
I quickly had to get back in the right lane (scary because mashing the brake and negotiating the right lane traffic all while the vehicle wanted to take off VERY FAST)
I continued to mash the brakes until I was able to pull into a parking lot (not but several 100 feet from where the event began)
I put the vehicle into park and the engine continued to rev and whine out of control
I freaked for a minute as I turned off the vehicle (thought to reset / reboot)
I turned off the vehicle waited like 10 seconds
I turned the vehicle back on
The engine was quiet and not running (thought to myself ok well then WTH)
I put the vehicle back into Drive
OMG the engine starts and revs back to the previous OMG moment (MASHED BRAKES AGAIN)
I put the vehicle back into park and the engine continued to rev and whine out of control
I turn off the engine again
I sit for at least a minute thinking to myself well is this just great, going to be calling ford dealership here in the next minutes
I turn the engine back on
The engine was quiet and not running
I put the vehicle back into Drive
AND well all was good to go and no more engine revving.

FYI still kind of freaked out about the experience
Not sure what I should do because it is all good now

Picked up April 13 2022
Mileage a bit over 10k like 10120

Serviced recently for airbag recall and first oil change

LOVE MY MAVERICK

Thanks
Wow super scary! FYI to all, throw it on neutral of this happens

A couple of days ago...
Sunny Dry Day about 60°F.

A) Went to Drive Thru for breakfast

B) Drove 3 miles to gas station with a car wash

C) Refueled

D) Started and drove through Car Wash in EV mode

E) Left Car Wash in EV Mode

F) Drove one block to Freeway On Ramp in EV mode.

G) Accelerated briskly using gas/hybrid - Short On Ramp

H) Hit 60 MPH - slow traffic ahead

I) removed foot completely from gas pedal, expected to drop into EV mode, but ENGINE STAYED ON at high RPM (no tach but I'll guess 2500 to 3000 based on sound)

J) This is so weird I look down to see if floor mat was stuck on gas pedal or something even though I didn't remove them, it was a drive-thru car wash. It wasn't.

K) I hit the brake pedal, I slow, engine stops, I'm in EV mode at 55 and slowing.

L) Shocked, I change lanes to far right, wait for a big gap, accelerate briskly from 45 to 60, take foot off the go pedal. HIGH RPM's continue for 2-3 seconds, then drop, then engine shuts off. I'm coasting in EV.

M) I tried it a few more times and could not replicate beyond those two "events".

Normal mode.

Is this drive by wire when you have a slow computer or computer glitch?
First time this has happened in 5000 miles. I've had an Escape Hybrid 2005 through 2019 and never had this happen.

How scary! I understand that logic often flies out the window in the moments of panic, but would flipping the truck in to neutral in this type of situation be an option?
It's an option worth trying, but only 50/50 chance of being useful. The selector is just a computer input device. The computer does not always do what you ask. Especially in error/faulted conditions. There is no mechanical linkage.

First oil change at 10,000 miles. Why did you wait so long?

Yes. This happened 3 weeks after. But I can't see it being related.

I have very similar thing happen to me years ago 1990’s in a Ford Tempo. The unintended acelleration happened three times and while it stopped after a while, it did it again as I put it onto reverse while parking it. Thankfully it was in front of the police station and was witnessed by a cop. He came over to give me hell but when I showed him that the car did it on its own (I had both feet outside of the car) he suggested I get it towed to the dealer. It was new and the dealer could not get it to repeat it. I had them call FMC safety and they put me in a rental car for a month. Ford flew someone out who interviewed me and the police officer. It rained that day. It first did it while it was pouring and I was in cruise control traveling 60-65 mph. They found water had gotten into some sealed control module. They resealed it and solved my problem. Wish you luck. This happened at the same time Audi had their issue of unintended acceleration.

There are reports that during the airbag recall some wires got damaged or pinched and the vehicle would not start after everything was put back together.

It could be that there is a damaged wire somewhere that has caused this issue.
