When I purchased my Maverick a few months ago, there was a wiring harness and a tailgate lock. The tailgate lock was never installed and the dealer is 100 miles away. Today I had a recall attended to and I asked the service department what the lock was for. They were not sure so they asked a technician.

A tailgate is easy to remove. Takes about 5 minutes and you no longer have a tailgate. Someone stole it because they wrecked theirs. A tailgate lock makes it a lot harder to remove the tailgate, but has no effect on how you use your tailgate. You will never know it was there. Now hopefully the thief goes somewhere else and takes someone else's tailgate. It was listed on the build sheet for $40. Cheap insurance in case you are interested.

p.s. not sure what topic this goes under, so I put it here.

You only need a lock if you leave the tailgate unlocked. Which of course, anyone could do by accident, so I’m not saying these secondary locks are a waste of money.

Here is how to install:

I believe the XL has a manual key locking tailgate, otherwise for the XLT and lariat the tailgate locks with the rest of the door locks.

You can add the OEM Ford wiring harness and power lock mechanism to the XL for about $150. Maybe this is what someone left for you.

Just an F. Y. I... We're talking about two different types of 'locks' here. There's the central locking system, that keeps the tailgate from being pulled open (to access the bed). The tailgate lock accessory (option from Ford, or elsewhere) is a ring device that fits on the tailgate hinge, preventing the tailgate from easily being removed off the truck. It's this one I believe the OP is referring to; I'd thought the dealer would've installed that lock before the truck was delivered new (?).

Yes, Solo, that is the one. It is a ring they installed in the bottom right of the tailgate so it cannot be easily removed from the truck.. One of the technicians knew and he put it on in about 5 minutes.

Your selling dealer should have installed this as part of the dealer prep before you picked in up. As a side note, the basic tailgate still takes tools to remove as it has a guard on it to prevent it from accidently coming off it's hinge. Has a Torx bolt to remove.
