The ball on the upper mount of the tailgate assist assembly snapped off(3 months use) and for the life of me I can't figure out how to release the loose ballmount from the head of the top of the cylinder. It's got a plastic thingy holding it in place and I can't figure out how to release it. Anyone out there that can help this dummy?

Is that an after market part that you installed or OEM?

Pictures and Brand of the Tailgate Assist will help but the ball usually just snaps in
Yep.
You're right it, just snaps on and off.
Here are some pictures of the lower ball attachment point. I hope this is what the op is referring to.
I use a HF plastic pry tool.

For a $20 to $40 part from Amazon. I would say just take the brackets off and replace the entire assembly with a new one. The replacement strut which will be cheaper to get it with all new parts

Those pics are exactly what I am looking at. The ball isn't coming out with moderate force. Will use as much force as these 69 year old arms can muster.
Thanks

If you're asking how to remove the strut from the ball, take a small straight blade screw driver and pry open the spring. There should be a small slot on the top of the spring. Pry it open to release the spring and it will come loos

More force did the trick. Now the broken ball is separated from the top of the cylinder. Not sure about a spring.

It is a C-shaped clip. It is removed by prying it with a small flathead screwdriver.

It was Klutchtech. Never did figure out the spring clip thing. I just yanked till the ball separated from the socket. So you use a small flatblade in that gap in the mount as shown by that last pic?

No. The flat blade screwdriver goes on the back side of the clip. That is out of view in the picture. I will try to take a picture.

No. The flat blade screwdriver goes on the back side of the clip. That is out of view in the picture. I will try to take a picture.
On my struts, I have recessed areas, identical on the top and bottom. Where you can either use a awl or screwdriver to pop the clip and slide the socket off of the ball.
