Forgive me if this is a dumb question, but I exclusively drove manuals for 50 years. That said I've driven some automatics owned by my spouse. I've always been under the impression that, for safety, automatic vehicles require the foot on the brake and the vehicle in Park to start. But my Maverick Eco XLT LUX will start without a foot on the brake (in Park). Just wondering if that's by design?

I checked the online owner's manual, and here's what it says....

Before starting your vehicle, check the following:
  • Make sure that the headlamps and electrical accessories are off.
  • Make sure that the parking brake is on.
  • Make sure that the transmission is in park (P).
  1. Fully press the brake pedal.

yes, I just jump in and turn the key and it starts just fine. I have only had it for 3 days now. I do not need to put my foot on the brake, but it is always in park at the time.

Every automatic I have owned can start without press the brake especially if they are physical keys. Now push button start vehicles do require you to press the brake.

I lean in and start mine all the time. I never even sit in the drivers seat. Haha.

Exactly this. If the vehicle has push button start then it's required that you press the brake pedal to start it. But if it requires a physical key to turn the ignition then most cars will start without pressing the brake pedal.

the only time you need to press the brake to start a newer car is when the have keyless ignitions.

I've never had a car that you had to press the brake to start it. Some of the manuals Ive had required the clutch being pushed in, some required a couple presses of the gas pedal though.

I have a 2023 lariat luxury package with the push button start . If I don’t have my foot on the brake the ignition goes accessory and will not start.
My Jeep Cherokee is the same way. I recently rented an Edge and it too required that my foot be on the brake to start.

I have a hybrid, not an ecoboost, but y'know, it never occurred to me to NOT put the brake down when starting the car.

(I've always driven automatics, but was taught in drivers ed back in the 90s to still put my foot down on the brake just in case something "went wrong" with the parking brake - necessary or not, it's just sort of a built in habit)

I'm inclined to think I always had my foot on the brake as well, although I honestly don't know for sure. But my Hyundai Tucson had the push button start and required the brake down, and I got so used to it, that always do it now. I didn't even know it wasn't required on my XLT.

The push button needs the break on to start it's the only way we can put the truck in accessory mode. If we don't want it to start
