Part of the reason I bought my Maverick is I wanted to be able to quickly and conveniently transport kayaks. I didn't want an expensive or complex setup for my kayaks that would make it difficult to throw them on the truck and get out to the river on a whim.

I have seen a huge variety of different kayak carriers online that are seemingly complex to install and not necessarily compatible with other accessories, such as the bed cover.

Below is my cheap and simple solution:

Ford Maverick Simple and Convenient Kayak Carrying Solution kayak solution (2)

This is comprised of two 2x6 pieces of wood that I trimmed for the bed cutouts and a $70 adjustable bed extender from Harbor Freight. By adjusting the bed extender to be about level with the 2x6's, I was able to easily and securely strap the kayak down, using only the four tiedowns built into my XL model Maverick. This also creates a storage space at the front of the bed that prevents any other cargo I want to carry from sliding out, while the tailgate is down. The ratchet strap I have is long enough to reach the end of my kayak and serve as a flag. If necessary, I should also be able to easily put another kayak in the bed and have a bit of storage space between and underneath the kayaks.

Nice that looks good! Can also carry anything else long without issue. 8' lumber will be a breeze.

Good idea!

BTW, I'd avoid using ratchet straps to secure your kayak and use cam straps instead. Your straps appear to be too tight and are deforming the hull. They don't make Necky yaks anymore,.

Don't go driving down the highway like that. You are sure to lose your Kayak to the asphalt. Kayaks don't look good with road rash.

Loop the straps around the load bar close to the Yak so it can't move side to side. Cut some holes in your 2x6's in the front to do the same. If it moves forward and back you may need a strap to the bow handle.

Cam straps would be $10 well spent. They are easier to use, don't flap in the wind and are not likely to dent your hull.

Happy paddling, see you on the river.
