He under promises and overdelivers. This is also from a text of photos included rather than seeing it in person. I suggest looking at customer review photos whenever you look for a PDR place. When he did my F-250's bed, he said the same thing and I couldn't even tell where the dents were. The only time I could sort of tell is if the light caught it just right at sunset.
Here is my guy:

Well after a month, I finally got my baby back good as new. Total cost was over 13k (2k deductible for me), including 1k to redo ceramic coat. Interestingly, the body shop began preliminary work dismantling and ordering parts, including a new rear door, before the official appraisal was done by Amica. The guy at the shop who was coordinating the work told me that Amica wanted to total the car, but he told them, OK but you are going to have to reimburse me for the work done to date as well as the owner for the depreciated value of the car. This stopped that for which I was grateful given all the mods I made last year. He explained that insurers make big bucks in the sale of car parts, especially with all the tech and sensors these days, so the threshold for totaling a vehicle has been markedly lowered, apparently even for only cosmetic damage as in my case. In fact, he said many or even most of the mom and pop auto junk yards that many of us used to frequent in our youths, carrying a few tools to find that tail light or other part much more cheaply than other sources, have been bought up by large national companies to create a nationwide online inventory of available car parts that can be sold very efficiently at markup.

OMFG ... $13k USD for a literal fender bender ??!!!

For reference, got a front door and front fender replaced on ours (with brand new OEM parts) by the Ford dealer for 5k CAD which is about $3700 USD at current exchange rate

I can't figure out where the extra 10k went for this repair

You aren’t kidding that cutting up totaled vehicles is a racket for the insurance companies. Back in 2019, my 16 year old son rear-ended an F250 while driving a 2016 Ford Fusion. The air bag deployed but there was not a great deal of damage…. Just the front end plastic and grill and the hood.

The estimate came back at $11,000+. The insurance totaled it and cut us a check for $17,000+. Apart from the air bag, that car could have easily been repaired. I have no doubt they made their money back and then some by parting out the car.

Sorry for your misfortune but props to you for manning up and reporting what happened in a public forum.

Since others have confessed their faux pas’s, about six weeks ago I backed into my brick mailbox leaving for work early in the morning. I dented my tailgate and crunched the bumper. Luckily, I’m acquainted with a retired guy with extensive body shop experience who fixed it up for $200.
In 2004 I bought a new F250 XL 4x4 LB CC. A week later, I had to drive to an Information Security conference in the middle of NYC. Of course, like a true moron, I drove my brand spanking new, unfamiliar, ~22' monster there. Making a hard left out of the parking garage after the conference, I nerfed a baluster and put a really nice scrape most of the way down the driver's side of the bed. I have been trying very hard to get a handle on the length of the Maverick since I bought it in December. I have noticed when pulling into short parking spaces in parking lots that it ain't nearly as short as it feels when driving it.

I did the same thing with my '96 Ranger, but in the other dimension: Had a brand new tall Leer cap on it and went into a garage with lowish ceilings. SCRAPE!
