I never really viewed Santa Cruz as competition, looks more like a Subaru to me. The price points have been blurred to the point this class doesn't make much sense anymore.Kind of saddened this morning to read Hyundai is discontinuing the Santa Cruz next year. I was kind of hoping, in the sense that competition is good for the breed, that they would bring out a vastly improved small truck. Now it looks like their next truck will be Ranger sized.

Losing a negative stigma, especially in business, is a difficult proposition. While Hyundai has certainly improved, I owned one of the first models back in the 1980s. My ex-wife wanted "a red one" and against my better judgement, I bought it. XLS trim; I forget the model. It was a complete POS and so yes, I now have a bias. Build quality was just awful.
Looks like the Santa Cruz was a decent vehicle although the 22-23 models had powertrain issues. They weren't selling very many of them which is likely why they were pulled.
I think that's it. It's similar to the Sport track in that respect which also didn't sell as well as it should have. It was marketed as an Explorer with a bed. The Santa Cruz looks just like a Tucson with a bed. Underneath, the Maverick is essentially an Escape with a bed. But you'd never know it just by looking at it. It looks like the F150s little brother. When my nephew drove my Maverick, he said it felt like he was driving his F150 just smaller. It was said as a compliment. Imagine if Ford had made the Maverick LOOK like what it really is. Imagine the Escape grille and body with a bed at the back. The results would have been a lot different.Ford knew what they were doing. They learned from the explorer sport track experience. On the road I had to look twice. To tell if it was a Honda Ridge line or a Hyundai.
And yes from the front I was looking at every other SUV at the same time.
Like the line in the movie Highlander,
‘There Can Be Only One’
They are actually somewhat popular around here. Nowhere near Maverick popular but popular enough. But it doesn't seem "truckly". It's not bad looking. But it's "cute". But you wouldn't imagine it getting dirty or being used to deliver parts or painted with commercial logos such as an exterminator or ac repair shop. The Maverick is at home as a suburban vehicle AND as a work vehicle. Can't imagine the Hyundai sca work vehicle even though it's actually more capable than the Maverick. But I can't imagine anyone actually using the Santa Cruz capability. The only SC that I know of belongs to a like Asian lady at my golf club.
The sport track was a good vehicle. But it just didn’t have “IT”. Same with the Santa Cruz. A good vehicle. It’s even better than the Maverick in some areas. But it doesn’t have “it”. The Maverick is greater than the sum of its parts. You might not quite be able to put your finger on it. But the Maverick come out ahead of the Santa Cruz by a significant margin Because it has “IT”. Ford learned from the explorer. Ford knows Trucks. Hyundai shied away from the truck label with the Santa Cruz. But forward leaned into it with the Maverick.they missed the boat when the SC concept was first fielded, the design was "stillborn",gracious! that was probably 15 years ago,I was really interested in the concept,it even had a 2 litre diesel as a purposed power train option,Ford "scooped" them don't think it was because of the "sporttrac" either, you all did know the ST had a v8 option right? for all you power-lusters.
Ok, I'm getting whip lash! Toyota just changed course again and now say they are NOT doing a compact (Maverick) pickup rival based on the low numbers sold in that category. Stay tuned! Kinda like Isuzu did with the "Hombre" funny thing when Isuzu was practically giving their no sales away, they never dropped the price on the "Hombre" _S10Yes, I posted that read onto the... "Toyota, swoops in for the Kill" thread...
I, Don't see Hyundai making a Truck, unless they are "Partnering" with someone else who already does...
Jerry
The reason you see older people driving Mavericks, is because we still want a truck like vehicle that can do small household tasks, is easy to get in and out of, gets good mileage, easy to park, fits in a garage, and is affordable. Need I say more?"Most drivers I see are older, like myself."
Same.
Bought my XL a year after retirement and you're right - I see way more older people driving Mavs.
Why is that???
The Maverick is actually a few inches longer than the Santa Cruz, has a 2 inch longer wheelbase, and a 6"longer bed. The Santa Cruz is a bit wider than the Maverick by an inch or so. But both are obviously compact trucks`I didn't consider the Santa Cruz a compact truck, it's larger than a Maverick and closer to a Honda Ridgeline and Tacoma in size.
