Returning my Maverick tomorrow

I ordered my Maverick XL Hybrid in September 2022 and picked it today. I am returning it tomorrow. The truck drove fine in the city, but 20 minutes on the highway was enough. I don't think the Maverick hybrids are highway vehicles. My father's 1972 bare-bones F100 drove better. I've never been more disappointed in my life.

This thread is hilarious. I haven’t driven an XL hybrid but my Lariat hybrid rides better and quieter than my 2019 Audi Q3 and is a pleasure on the highway at any speed and loves the curves. I can’t imagine an XL would be that much different but I hope you find what you are looking for.

I call it the Hybrid tax. You want a hybrid, you do without AWD and the associated IRS plus the option of getting the FX/4 package which is the steal of the century for 800 bucks. Don't tell Ford, please but many folks would have paid double for the package, including me most likely.

Now with the said, on the flip side one could call it the AWD tax, where we see much less gas mileage for our ability to have AWD.

Different strokes for different folks. Can't we all just see we all love each other?

It was tiring to drive. The steering is heavy. It feels like there was no power steering and/or it's severely out of alignment. A lot of reviews say it drives more like a car than a truck. Not this one. My expectations weren't high going in knowing that it is an inexpensive vehicle.

Did you check the lane keeping settings? If you have it on High the steering can feel heavy when changing lanes without first turning the blinking on. Maverick doesn't know that you want to change lane and will try to keep you in your lane and on the high setting it feels like there's no power steering if you continue changing lanes, at least until you get into the new lane or turn on the blinker. I've become an angel at turning on my blinkers now with the lane keeping setting on high! Just my 2 cents!

Off topic but I get sick of people bitching how bloated and too big the Maverick is. I'm thinking they must be comparing a regular cab classic Ranger with the 4 door Maverick. So, I decided to check out Edmunds and do some comparisons in size with my old Ranger FX/4 with my new Maverick.

Numbers do not lie. My Maverick is 2.9 inches shorter than my old Ranger and has a 4.6 inches shorter wheelbase. Turns tighter by 2 feet. My Maverick is 2.4 inches taller and 3.2 inches wider. That translates to more shoulder room and roominess in the cab compared to the cramped Ranger. Maybe the Santa Cruz is smaller all the way around, I do not know about that but bring your anti theft clubs wherever you go with it. Gonna need them.

I had an '01 Rager with the 3.0 and what a dog that thing was. Gutless as hell, handled like a supertanker, rode like a minecart and drank like a draft horse.
Around the same time, my buddy had a Mazda B4000, 2010 I think. Almost nothing had improved in the 9 year difference, it still rode like poo and was even thirstier due to being 4x4 and 4 liter engine but it was fairly peppy in comparison.

I drove a Santa Claus, non-turbo and it was gutless. It's a lot of weight for 191hp, the SC is around 400-500 pounds heavier than a Maverick depending on options and you really feel it when merging into freeway or highway traffic.
Other than power, which one assumes is solved by the turbo variant, the car is nice enough to drive but so ugly. I hate the looks while it's fresh and new, I can't imagine it aging well.

What's this test drive you speak off? Like, get in a car and drive it before placing an order? What planet do you live on? They haven't been able to keep Mavericks in stock anywhere near me.

When my dealer had one on the lot, it was a sold order.

I was fortunate that my dealer had one expressly for test drives, an early '22 XL and they were eager to get me into it. Being able to drive one with 45000 km on it sealed the deal, it was still solid and hadn't picked up any weird squeaks or rattles.

Either you had a truck broken out of the factory, and somehow couldn't figure that out, or you have had zero disappointments in your life.

There isn't a single vehicle ever produced in the 70's that even compares to how the Maverick, or any modern vehicle, drives. How you even begin trying to compare a solid rear axle leaf-spring truck.

I don't know if its a troll post, but I will say my experiencing driving my 2023 Hybrid Lariat and prior to that 2022 Hybrid Lariat do not match even remotely with anything he is saying. From my perspective of driving these Mavs for the last 2 year I got to call BS.

You do what it is good for you. Some people used to drive a slower car without sound dampening, so the Maverick hybrid is a huge step up. Some traded a fully loaded full size truck with bi turbo or V8 for a little truck just to go green and found out how dangerous it was to drive a Maverick hybrid on highways. Mav hybrid performs alright on a flat road with a lot of slower cars as long as the driver and passengers can bear the excessive cabin and road noises. However, it would not be a good vehicle on slope highways or in town with many expensive more powerful cars. Both Mav hybrid and EB are good cars with a truck bed at the launch price points for the right owners. They are not just for everyone. It is good that the dealership will take it back.

I wondered if this was the issue but I was not up on that year and what options were available and it seemed like too much time to go back and look so I deleted my comment before posting. I suspect this might be true and the OP was to embarrassed to say what happened.

That's so true!! I guess I am just amazed that he trashed Maverick Hybrid, which I have, so quickly! I just can stand when people do stuff like with nothing to back it up! I should've just done like you said and pointed and laugh because I know he's missing out on an awesome truck!!

Yeah unless you drive like a clown or don't pay attention to anything around you, hybrid (and most cars under 200hp, which are very very many) have plenty of power to get the ride done.
