I literally just got a call from my dealer saying mine has finally arrived. However life has happened since I've ordered it (new kid, new job, etc) and I'm unsure if it's something I need right now. I'm sure the dealer is perfectly fine with me saying I don't want it because they'll have no problem selling it, likely at an inflated price. But that got me thinking of what would be the better outcome. I'm considering flipping it because I have a neighbor who's been in the hospital's ICU for a couple of weeks after a bad roofing accident and I thought those proceeds could help them out in their bad time. What thoughts do you guys have? On the plus side it will be in the hands of another Maverick customer who will love it very soon.
Honestly man, that’s tough. If you want the Maverick and can swing it I would take it. It’s great to help people in need but realistically, after taxes and fees and what not, how much cash would you really be to able give your neighbor? A couple grand? Whatever the number is I’m sure they’d appreciate it but personally I’d rather get the truck and help my neighbor in other ways like mowing his lawn when summer comes or getting them groceries or things they need -it’s a nice idea but to me that’s a tough call for sure. Good luck and let us know what you decide.

Only regret we have with our maverick experience is that we didn't order two (or three). Our neighbor is sales director at local CarMax, he'll ask me every few weeks if I am interested in selling; says he'd have no problem getting us $5k+ more than we paid OTD last April.

On a $32K MSRP Maverick - After 7% sales tax, +excise tax, +title fee, +registration fee, +document fee I need $5K over the MSRP to make less than $2K.

Same - but I think there's a good chance for that! Hybrid Lariats are quite rare on used car sites from what I've seen.
Mine gets built this week, but since they (salesperson/dealer) dropped the ball on my adaptive cruise, I'm inclined to flip it if I can. The only reason I was paying for a Lariat was adaptive cruise.

We paid $26,200 OUT THE DOOR last year. My neighbor is pretty confident he could get us ~$32k. If there was a reasonable alternative <$30k, we'd sell in a heartbeat.

Right - that's the problem, you need another MSRP Maverick (or Civic, or whatever you want) in pocket

The used car environment has thrown the "never buy new" advice out the window.

"Never buy new" has been nonsense for a lot of the past two decades. "Cash for clunkers" screwed up the used car industry for years and there are always specific cars that never a deal used unless you buy really used (ie. toyotas and hondas). Our other car, a '17 jetta was bought new for $13,900 OTD in December '16 (thanks Dieselgate). Zero chance we could have gotten a slightly used one for that.

When my Mav comes in April I'm going to put a For Sale sign on the back window with a $60k price tag, if only to piss people off 🙃

I'm keeping my order even though I decided the Mav isn't for me after all.

If it actually gets built for 2023, I am going to either:

1. Take it for a test drive down to the Carmax about two miles from the dealer and get a quote, buy it and sell it the same day, and put the profit in my kids college fund.

OR

2. Go get my $300 deposit back, have a nice dinner and forget about Ford.

You don’t lose all that tax, at least where I live you don’t. You apply it to your next vehicle. For example if you sell your Mav for 35k and buy something else that’s 37k, you only pay tax on $2k.
