Refueling Door Won't Open

Did you try pushing & holding the fuel door release button?

On the Hybrid, the push button on the lower left must be pushed and held until it releases the fuel door, and it displays Fuel Door Open on the instrument cluster. ....... Just pushing the button and releasing will not open the fuel door. Found this out the first time I filled up. Not mentioned in the OM.

No I didn't press and hold. The other times I fueled up that wasn't necessary. The button had no travel when I pressed it this time. That's what made me think that the button was stuck.

I have not seen a three (3) fingered (symbol goes here) pull tab on my lariat yet.

Saw that here a while back. Kind of defeats the purpose of a locking fuel door if you think about it. Although on our hybrid, I think it's more about the pressure.

Correct. The fuel door being electrically actuated on the hybrid is to signal for it to vent the pressurized fuel tank and allow time for that to complete before opening.

I was wondering what that green thing was .. i nearly though it was some gps tracker device installed by a theft to find where i live to steal the truck at night….
i tried to pull on it but i was afraid to break it… so i just forgot about it… that was 2 weeks ago..

The button does not push in far, just enough to open the door and send the message to the instrument display.

I’m pretty sure the manual states it can take up to like 30 or 45 seconds for it to depressurize and open on the hybrid. I have not had that issue…yet. It usually opens in a second or two.

Sorry to dredge up a nearly year old thread, but a search shows this is the closest to my problem. I was about 60 miles from home today and started my Hybrid to find the check engine light on. Hadn't misbehaved on the way there so I carefully drove the first few miles, decided it would make it home and got there without incident.

Put by OBD scanner on it and got

Switch Stuck Low

I read the procedure for the manual release noting the ignition has to be on - I assume so tank can depressurize - and that you have to fuel it in a 20 minute window.

I'll call the dealer tomorrow and assume I can fuel and drive it until they can bring it in.

Has anyone else gone through this? Thanks.

I am experiencing the same issue. I went to open the fuel door, it did not open, again, pushed the fuel door button, did not open. I pushed the fuel door lightly and it popped open. Check engine light was on from there on out. Right at 36200 miles...almost like a warranty alarm clock or something! What was your resolution and fix? warranty? thanks! Bob

Sorry for the delayed update. Finally had an appointment on July 11th (a dealer where I know one of the service writers - selling dealer would have been another two weeks beyond that!) Tech diagnosed that the whole headlight switch assembly where the fuel door button is the lower left corner has to be replaced. The part is back-ordered. It will be 4 weeks Monday since it went in and no news on part being available yet. I've been using the emergency fuel door release but hope it's fixed before winter.

I know this thread is almost a year old, but my fuel door would not open tonight. Had to use the manual release. When I got home it worked. Did the poster above ever get his problem fixed, or has anyone recently had this problem?

This wasn't a problem in the old days, where you just flipped the fuel door open manually.

I had the same type of fuel door release system on my Chevy Volt. Therefore, I was used to waiting a few seconds for the system to depressurize.
Here are some screenshots of the manual that tell you exactly what to do and what to expect.
