Since the back-up camera is mounted under the Ford emblem on the tailgate...

Does the camera or rear cross alert function work with the tailgate down when hauling longer items?

I'm interested as well. I doubt the camera would be of any help with the tailgate down; it's on the tailgate as you mentioned and would be aimed downward and forward with the tailgate down.

Cross-traffic alert might, depending on sensor placement and calibration. My F-150 and my Nissan Frontier have rear proximity sensors and would constantly beep with the tailgate down.

I believe the cross traffic sensors are in the bumper, tailgate position doesn't matter.

They are actually in the tail lights, so they work regardless of bumper position.

Camera is useless as it points to the ground.

Thanks for that information, I though the sensers were in the bumper. Either way the position of the tailgate doesn't matter.

And they freak out when the tailgate is down.

Sorry for the necro bump
BLIS (blind spot with cross-traffic alert) or the rear parking aid sensors? The middle two sensors are Rear Parking Aid only and are practically touching the tailgate when it's down so yeah, it'll definitely freak out in reverse unless you temporarily disable it. See the 2 circles - 1 directly above the 1 in the license plate.

Parking assist. It just thinks you are about to hit something. Always wondered why it had an option to turn it off until I had the tailgate down, then it made sense.

I have a front/rear camera system, in the box, just waiting for my Maverick to come. Someday.

Put the tailgate down and you will have a great view when it comes to backing up to the trailer hitch. Be spot on and can drop it right over the ball. Well maybe not if the camera turns off in that position,

I've only driven once so far with the tailgate down (just got it from the SIBL company, and they wanted me to wait another hour or so before closing the tailgate to allow the SIBL to cure a little more). I backed up into my driveway at the end of that drive, and the backup camera gave me a beautiful view of my driveway surface. :ROFLMAO: So, no. The backup camera doesn't become disabled if the tailgate is open.

It does, but make sure your tailgate stays clear of trailer jack..don't ask me why I know...

I haven't hooked up to a trailer yet, but just thinking about the clearance from the tailgate to the receiver I would suspect that the tailgate fully down might not leave enough clearance for a trailer hitch. Now, put the tailgate in half-down position and it might help line up a hitch to the ball. That said, he dashed line in the backup indicators should help line up to the centerline. Not sure if you can see the ball with the tailgate fully up to know when to stop backing up...

Sounds like a good experiment for someone who regularly hooks up to a trailer to try. (Sadly, not me. Not only don't I have a trailer, but I haven't even bothered to get a ball yet...)
