I’ll start out by saying that I’m not sure that the noise is coming from the rear brakes as it could be coming from somewhere else in the rear of the truck. Recently and only when backing up, I began hearing a loud noise or growl similar to what I can only describe is a binding brake. It does not appear to be affected by weather or temperature and it occurs randomly and only when backing up the first time in the morning or when the truck has been sitting for an hour or so. To be clear, most of the time the noise is absent. The truck has 9900 miles on it. The brakes have been operating normally except for this noise issue. Perhaps it is a problem in the driveline or differential? Thanks

This is a common issue. I get it soemtimes, usually when the truck sits for a few days and it’s wet from rain. The rear rotors tend to rust up fast, and if you look at the rears compared to the fronts they look rough in comparison. My guess is that the parking brake drags over the rust and makes that noise.

Thanks for your input but I don’t think it is due to rotor rust. Yesterday I drove 10 miles to town with plenty of braking, parked it for an hour, started it up and got the growl when backing up.

See if it growls with your foot off the brake - that will eliminate the rotors pads etc as a cause?

Keep in mind the hybrid doesn't use the traditional brakes as often as a regular ICE vehicle. I've seen a lot of posts about this over the years, most people seem to think it's the brakes, since it can happen to EB and Hybrid units. I haven't seen any posts about anyone finding a fix, but I'd love to hear about it if you can.

I get it almost every time I wash my car myself then put it in the garage. Next morning, moans and groans as I back out. Had similar issue with my 2020 Escape.

I'm still half convinced it is due to flash rusting on these rotors. Take a gander on a humid day. These rotors rust quick. I have the same hum noise as I reverse and apply light brakes first thing in the morning.

I am curious how the parking brake works. Does it apply one brake pad or is it a separate mechanism all together?

I have been listening carefully to when the noise occurs, and except for once it is always when backing up the first thing on a cold morning. It sounds to me like one of the pads maybe sticking on the rotor. It doesn’t last more than a couple of seconds. I never set the parking brake. I get a similar noise from my tractor when I forget to release the parking brake. It doesn’t happen a lot now, but if it gets worse, I will bring it into the dealer.

This happens all the time with my '25 Lariat ecoboost. Makes the vehicle feel really cheap. Never have had this happen on previous vehicles, even with high miles. :(

I have the same noises. Backing out of the garage every morning. I also noticed it today backing out from the parking lot after it sat for about 4 hours. It‘s a regular occurrence. Temps have been below freezing. I was planning on having the dealership look at it when I bring it in for its first oil change. 2026 XLT AWD Hybrid. ~1600 miles. That’s the only problem to this point other than trying to figure out how to navigate around the infotainment screen.

If you hear it with foot off brake - something is “sticking”.

If you hear it (like I do) with my foot gently on brake while reversing - it’s dust or surface rust etc on.

That said, I have an EB with “regular” brakes. Squeaky in reverse is common amongst many different vehicles with “regular” brakes. Your “grind” could be completely different situation. Good luck finding it:)

Motor moves the piston exactly like a brake press would - so both pads.

I start off driving forward - same thing on light press if I skipped a day of driving.
