Really BAD issue with remote start Fordpass... Hybrid Maverick

Same thing happened to me yesterday! Cold day in Denver and when remote starting after the truck sat for over 24 hours it smelled just like rotten eggs/fish. Bought the car 3 days ago....

When I hear rotten eggs, I think of a battery being overcharged and boiling over, not an engine running rich situation. And with the starting battery under the back seat it would definitely fill the cabin with that gosh awefull smell.

If you are having this issue I would pull the protective cover over the battery and see if it has boiled over. There might be a issue with the programing and the engine is over-charging the starting battery in remote start mode that is not present in driving mode.

Definitely bring it up the dealer so Ford can become aware of the issue.

Hybrid Maverick’s coolant lines are attached to exhaust for faster heater core warm-up.

Had this same issue a week or so ago with my hybrid, took a video of it but I haven't seen the issue since, I'm going to keep a closer eye on it.

I too had this issue just yesterday. It was about 10 degrees outside. Figured I'd remote start while finishing up after brunch downtown. When we got to the Maverick it was running but something was wrong. As we got closer it sounded like it was surging. The idle was going up and down over and over again. Then the rotten egg smell started. It was extremely intense. After I put the key in, it didn't seem to change. I shut the car off and turned it back on. Everything seemed to be fine. The surging stopped and the smell started to get better. Took a while to get the smell out of the car though. Very strange and concerning

Def seems like this is an issue with the fordpass/remote start programming with the hybrid. At least it should be just an update and nothing mechanically wrong.

Well now, couldnt remote start this morning because the car was deader than a doornail this morning on the 12v battery. Had to jumpstart it.

That’s not good. Sounds like the hybrids have some issues Ford needs to iron out…

28F here in central Louisiana this morning.
15 minutes before I left, I used FP to remote start.
FP stated something like “remote will stop in <15 minutes”.
There was a selection to increase remote time. I selected “remote will stop in <29 minutes“.
No smell or anything else weird but nice warm drive.

Can you even do that with a Hybrid? Hell I dont even know how to jumpstart the thing if I had to.

I stopped by the Ford dealership and explained my situation to the service manager. He involved the lead tech and we agreed it was best to submit a tech ticket to engineer team letting them know of my rotten egg smell during remote start. I doubt anything will come of it but at least it's documented I guess.

Did the tech have any ideas what the cause was? The smell points toward battery issues for me

I've had issues with the ford pass start, but that was just it not starting period. I would check it out again, then if it still doesn't work and you get that smell, call your dealer immediately.

Contact ford pass might be upgrading system
