PTU OIL CHANGED

I just changed the PTU oil at 1800 miles. I know a lot of people reported that it was under filled but mine was perfect from factory: about 13 ounces drained and the same amounted added. The fluid was cloudy but I didn't see any particles like others have. The magnet on the drain plug had the same "sludge" as others. Very simple maintenance. It took about 45 minutes if you include getting it on stands. (The sludge from the magnet is what is on the shop rag.)

I had a similar experience. I did find that my RDU was slightly underfilled but not much. Similar cloudiness and sludge for RDU.

What is a PTU or RDU?

In general terms, the PTU is the power transfer unit. On an all wheel drive vehicle, it transfers power to the rear wheels when needed. The RDU is the rear drive unit. It basically runs the rear wheels. Both units have separate fluids. The manual says under normal driving, these fluids don’t have to be replaced as part of normal maintenance. But it is so simple to replace them that many people add it to the normal maintenance schedule.

It Is Labor Day and I just changed my PTU again at 31,000 I changed it 15,000 it was under filled. I also changed my rear differential unit for the first time and it was underfilled as well. This was on a 2024.

I will never change that oil. My Mav is front wheel drive only.

Were they low enough that you wish you had done both jobs much earlier?
I'm planning on doing my PTU for the first time at 2K.

I do mine every 15k
Up to 35k miles now.
Both times they were still kind of clear but not bad at all.
