Paint Problem

We have hot pepper red, 3800 miles in, just a few hood very small chips. Paint is soft and doors ding easy. Product of a cheap truck I guess. Our 04 F150 had much better paint and looked nearly as good as day one 18 years later. Doubt I’ll ever be able to say that about Maverick, as much as I love it.

Thats like my current vehicle. I have a 2008 Kia Sorento. Stays out side and the white paint still looks practically new with 100,000 miles on it. Same goes for the interior. Years ago my dad had a 2007 Expedition and the paint was bubbleing all over the place… I sure hope the Maverick doesn’t look like the face of the moon after just a year….

Was it totally brushless or did they have cloth strip that went over the vehicle. I don't like car washes and learned quickly to stay away from them. Bought a foam canon, quality pressure washer, and shampoo with zero ph and do it myself. My wash in includes a spray down, a foam application to let it sit for awhile and remove surface dirt, a spray and then a hand wash followed with another spray and towel or air dry. I suspect either the carwash could have done this especially if they used cloth strip ( a direct replacement for brushes in some touchless car washes) to clean the truck. The brushes are the worse but the cloth strip if they weren't properly lubed or had contamination on them could mess with your paint as well.

@Akmaverick : I was a former District Service Rep for different auto manufacturers. The pics of the following tool are what I used to view client complaints about paint chips and scratches. I used a 30Xs Microscope (Radio Shack).

What I looked for was which direction the paint chip/scratch edge was pointing. IF it was pointed UP or outward, then it was considered a paint defect. IF it was pointed DOWN or inward, it was considered caused by external event, like a rock or something abrasive.
(This is my way, but it is not the ONLY way. Body shops use other methods.)

You can request to meet with the District Service Manager to inspect the paint to determine if the cause is defective paint through either Ford Motor Co Customer Service OR your servicing dealer.

I strongly suggest seeing if a friend or neighbor has a tool like this to view it before meeting the DSM. It will give you a leg-up if the paint chip is pointing up or outward.

My Lariat has only 900 miles on it. Noticed the first chip on the hood edge around 300 miles. Then noticed the chips on the roof. There are 20 roof chips. The only thing I can think that may have caused the damage is running it through a brushless car wash. Nothing has been put on the roof of the vehicle. More chips appeared again after going through the brushless car wash. None of these chips are due to normal wear and tear or rock chips. Is anyone else experiencing this sort of problem? I put in a complaint to the company after the dealer said it was denied under warranty. I don't know what will come of it. If anyone else run into a issue with paint chipping, submit a complaint to the company. Otherwise they won't have any information to act upon for future claims.

Yes, there are chips on body and bumper, but how do you explain external damages to the roof and to that extent? Or the hood on the edge by the wiper arm? Or on the door handle? Nothing has hit the roof other than a cotton towel and water blasted on it from a car wash. If the paint can't hold up to a car wash, I'm guessing it doesn't stand a chance from road dirt. If the paint job didn't have issues, maybe the chips to the bumper and body wouldn't have occurred. I haven't heard any rocks hitting the truck in the 900 miles I have driven it. I think we all know when we hear a rock hit.

The hood by the wipers could be from the wiper arm. I know if you raise them it's a real tight fit

In reality it takes QUITE a while for paint to FULLY cure....I for one, NEVER go to a car wash with my new cars. I hand wash for at least 3-6 mos. My 2021 bronco still has never been in a car wash, I've had that over 6 mos. My Maverick has never either, had since 12/23. No chips or paint issues on my maverick with over 6k on the clock. Cactus grey.

Old school paints didn't take that long to fully cure but it sure seems like these new "eco" paints certainly do. Yep no auto car washes for me during the break in period when hopefully it arrives next month.

What specs on that bronco ? We bailed last March after having a day 2 reservation and our dealer then used our reservation to obtain two stock units that they received and put huge ADM's on. Gotta love the system - lol

Brushless car washes use high pressure water to wash, they recycle water to save money ( and they claim the environment while using stronger chemicals ) if the filtration is worn out or damaged and sediment gets into the wash then you basically have a sandblaster hitting new not totally cured paint. While one could claim "rock chips" on forward facing chips Im guessing with that much damage and paint "chips" the carwash is the culprit. Always better to hand wash.

I have paint chips on my roof, top of my hood, and front bumper.. they're small but they are there and unexplained. I'm not too happy

You have chips, (scratches, some look like vertical claw marks!), on three different substrates using at least two different types of paints. Painted in three different locations. Body steel painted at the assembly paint, plastic for the fascia painted at a tier one supplier and either nylon or cast aluminum for the door handle again painted at a tier one supplier. I'm guessing all the paint isn't bad.
Tough situation and it sucks but I'm not sure you'll get anywhere with it. I like the fella thought about the recycled water at the car wash. Personally I hand wash all my vehicles.

My sister-in-law is working with Toyota to get her Highlander repainted. Pearl white paint that is pealing off in sheets. Toyota told her the sun is doing this to the paint. Look at the list of cars and tell me that's not bad paint.

General comment not directed at you. No offence. Just making a point that vehicles built at different factories, with different painters, on different vehicles, gets back to paint supplier.

Gotcha. Yes things like that do happen for sure. Your comments actually reenforce my thoughts that in the OP's post that the paint is at fault is wrong, I'll bet your sister-in-law's fascias, mirror housings etc are fine, (again different paints). If fact Toyota states in the attachment that it is the sheet metal paint. The OP has three separate substrates with odd looking scratches or whatever you want to call them.

Your correct about the sheet metal paint. Her roof and hood have lost most of the paint. All plastic and vertical surfaces look good.
