Back in 1989 when I first started using Mobile1 I was told by Mr. Henry Yunick
(Yes "Smokey" Yunick) to change my oil every 6,000 miles and my oil filter every 3,000 miles and top off the oil. He loved synthetic oil.
He told me about molecular structure of synthetic oil versus mineral base oil. How it filters, how it resist shearing....etc.
There is a story about Smokey running in a race at Daytona. He skipped the final fuel stop, did a burnout after winning and then drove the car to his "Best Damn Garage in America". He was a master at finding places to hide fuel. One time, he put fake fire extinguishers in his car. Filled with gas, of course.
A true, one of a kind, American pioneer. And a GREAT story teller.

It was actually just happenstance, my wife and I were on vacation in Daytona Beach, Florida. I'd always read the 'Say Smokey' column in *Popular Science.
Spare of the moment I said, I want to stop in and take a look at his shop. It turns out Smokey was there. I asked him about this new motor oil Mobil 1 and he started to talk.........
To this day I remember that visit just like it was yesterday.

*yes folks it was popular science Not Popular Mechanics.🤷‍♂️

I worked at a full service gas station in 1979 through 1982 (Mobil Gas Station) and remember when Mobil 1 first came out - could not mix it with conventional oil. Had a stack of stickers to put under the hood and on the dip stick warning that the car had Mobil 1 in the crankcase. Was also told that if you went back to conventional, the seals would begin to leak....all stuff of wives tales that all proved false....them was the days!!!

I believe it's been about five days since there was a new oil change thread. I was starting to worry. This one will go 17 pages like the other 300 oil threads started in 2026. 😂

The moment the mag hit the mailbox, I would turn to his column. Then lay the mag down to finish later.

You're all wasting money....

AMSOIL synthetic motor oil generally allows for oil change intervals of up to 25,000 miles or one year, depending on the specific product and driving conditions. For severe service conditions, the interval may be reduced to 15,000 miles or one year.

I only change my oil during local volcano eruptions.

I changed my oil 4/4 at 19,645 miles, just changed it again 4/28 at 24,691. Mobile 1 full synthetic, you wanna come look at my oil and tell me I could have gone another 10,000 miles? It was pretty dark

I thought the LOL faces would give it away that this was light hearted BS. I like to poke at the AmsOil guys for quoting this type of stuff and posting as fact.
