I don't know what you're on about, but I'd love to see some of these "top dollar" trade amounts. No dealership offered us "top dollar" amounts for trades this year.. they played the same low ball game they always have.

2017 Elantra Limited - trade offer @ Honda dealership $12,000. They even tried to guilt me that I needed to accept that offer because some family "needed" the car. Sold to Carmax for $16,100.

2019 Genesis G70 - trade offer @ Acura dealership $26,500. Auctioned on Carmigo to a Chevy dealership for $30,200.

Not saying same experience for everyone, but seems the typical non-Carmax dealer is not really offering up anymore than usual.
We did not try to trade-in our VW jetta when we bought our Maverick, but we recently solicited offers from Carvana and Vroom (mostly out of curiosity) and they are dropping fast. In February Vroom quoted us $12,100 and their offer two weeks ago was $8,600. Should have sold it then, before I dropped $2k changing the timing belt, replacing the windshield, brake pads, and basic tune-up. Not worth selling a newer car now with <70k miles even though we rarely drive it and could easily do without it.

Continued inflation and rising unemployment, will as they always have, dampen the market. it is a seller's market now. It will become more of a buyers market.

Jeeeez., 6'-4 and 5'-2. Shades of my mom and dad. They were good. That's the long and short of it.

Once again. If you have sold a used car (at an iflated value) and are bitching about the mark up at dealerships, you are a hypocrite.

Nobody forces you to pay a stupid price for a vehicle. The marketplace is what it is. Grow up.
Yep, prices on both sides of that equation are still dumb. :) Luckily, I’m not paying a stupid price. Not sure what part about laughing at insane Carmax prices indicates that I’m not grown, but that’s the internet for you.

I'm grown. This market didn't start yesterday. That doesn’t make those prices any less ridiculous. Something stupid that keeps happening over time is still stupid. More than anything, I enjoyed the fact that my Granger XL is going to cost half this Carmax XL.
The market is the market.
You should see what I charge my renters now.

People will pay it. Bitching about the price makes no sense.

Carmax just wanted it more

If the environment corrected that 12k offer would be more like 6.

Good thing shopping your trade. Did the same with a Honda and a mav.

It's been said by more than one manufacturer. I know Mercedes and GM for sure have said the days of lots of inventory are over, regardless of chip availability. They plan to keep inventory low to keep prices up.
Hope it bites them in the ass and people keep cars longer. They will start stocking them when people get tired of ordering and waiting. Especially since chip shortage won’t be forever.

And peps thought I was gouging asking $40k for my Lariat, which MSRP was $37.6k.

Alto Blue Lariat 2.0 awd
Lux Pack
FX4 pack
4k tow pack
Co-Pilot pack
Moonroof
Full size spare

But I also had a 2” lift, new Falken Wildpeak AT3W 245/65-17 tires on it, along with upgraded LED back up lights, cargo lights, Gator tonneau cover and Ford OEM Maverick bed mat all added by me out of pocket.

I guess the real losers were the peps who didn’t take advantage of my reasonable offer and said I was price gouging which was in factuality a fair asking price.
so sorry I don’t feel sorry for anyone at this point and I kept my Maverick

The peps? What?

The real loser sounds like the person who kept a car they didn't want.. I don't think anyone was looking for your pity. You could have sold that truck for more than $40k then and you still could.

But waiiiit, I thought manufacturer direct ordering allowing low lot inventory was supposed to be the great salvation of the buyers and death to the wretched dealers?

I've been perusing on CarGurus at used Mavericks for sale across the country and the prices are absolutely insane. On average, XLs listed between $32K-$39K, XLTs listed between $38K-$42K, and Lariats listed between $42K-$50K. The market has lost its mind but thanks to the good ole chip shortage and dealers purposely keeping inventory low, it draws the price of used vehicles and makes them unattainable for someone with a brain cell. I say that because eventually some numnut will pay that ridiculous markup and dealers will continue to practice this. I don't see the car market going back to normal as a result when practicing what's going on now is more profitable. I'm hoping for at least a cool down in the market next year.
I walked into a Ford dealership yesterday to get touch up ain’t. I was approached by no fewer than 4 sales guys asking if I wanted to sell it back to them. One told me they get a number of calls each day inquiring about a Mav. That’s a hard NO. Love my truck

They can set their price. I can say it’s dumb. Market or not, it’s short-sighted and alienates buyers. People who operate on the frequency of screwing the customer because they can (i.e. “its the market)aren’t doing some noble thing. They’re riding a boom and ignoring the bust that always follows. That boom/bust system looks great when you’re stacking profits, but it loses it’s charm when you don’t have a pot to piss in.

When the rubber meets the road, dealerships will be closing their doors because of the ill will generated by these last couple years. If you grew up in the rust belt like me, it’s not some big win for capitalism, or our country, when you drive through town past a bunch of closed down car dealerships with nothing but weeds on the lot. Car companies are putting policies in place to try to save them from their own greed, and they can’t see the forest for the trees.
Cut the crap already. It’s garbage. The same subprime lending that put our economy in the dumper in 2008. If you can’t see that an 8 year loan for a car priced 15-20k over MSRP is horseshit, you need to get some new glasses. Just because they can, doesn’t mean they should.

Did anyone sell his/her maverick to a private party? What’s your experience?
dealerships/carvana i get it but asking some 5-10k extra over what you paid to buyers is a bit tricky. How did it go?
