So I got the OEM Ford Tri-Fold with my Mav and its nice but after rain today its not very waterproof, at least compated to the old BakFlip G2 I had on my F150...

I though it was basically a rebranded MX4 which is the next gen BakFlip... which after 12 years was still fairly water tight... so I am surprised that brand new one is not very water tight.

I am wondering if it was perhaps installed incorrectly or if that is how it is. The biggest offender seems to be the rubber flap at the end on the tailgate doesn't really cover very much...

Wondering if anyone has any recommendations on more watertight options? I prefer hard for the security aspect.

The design of the Maverick's bed does not lend itself to being waterproof, without some additional steps. It depends on how far you want to go. Some owners use caulking around the seams of a bed cover to keep water out, but that only works if you never need to take it off, or open the panels. Some owners have redirected the flow of the drains off the roof, but that requires removing the black trim on the back of the cab and part of the bed.

As for the length of the covers, that's just how long most manufactures seem to be making the covers, if you have it right against the window you might need to pull it back a little. There are different versions of the OEM tri-fold. Some are based on the MX4 (which has been revised 2-3 times since the Maverick came out), and others are based on the Rough Country design, IIRC.

I've been know to add a length of weatherstripping on the top of the tailgate to help close that gap,,,

If you don’t plan on taking the rails off you can run some silicone underneath it and that’ll stop it. I’ve had mine for almost 3 years and never taken it off. Just an option, only thing I could do to stop the leaks

I have checked mine after really heavy down pours and bone dry, not a sign of water 11 months into owning the Maverick. Not sure if it is the way it was installed or if I just got lucky with the way it fit. It was done by a contractor of the dealership where they get extra fitments done for new purchases. IMO not much use having the cover if it does not keep things dry and I would worry about any accumulated corrosion or such from water infiltration and standing water in the bed area. Initially I was worried about water getting in and used sealed storage containers to make sure stuff stayed dry, now I don't even think about carrying stuff lose when it rains.

I have the Ford tri fold top and I might get a drop or 2 of water in a down pour or car wash....

I had the Ford tri-fold on my first Mav, no leaks and have done the same thing on my second and now third Mav, no leaks not even in carwash, 1st go back and tighten all claps week or two after installing but first remove cover there are 4 seams 2 on each side and 2 on back under window, go to any hardware or Home Depot get black seam sealer small tube 5 to 10 bucks neatly fill in the seam on the sides only need to do less than a inch so you cant see it with cover on, across the back you don't see, I will add some photos when I get to my truck. As for the tailgate seal I have never had a problem adding a seal wont work every time you open and close its going to rip that off, if cover is tightened down properly cant see it leaking except on the sides sometimes.
I had a friend with hi pressure washer shoot the cover with me inside 99% of the water came from those seams, very little from the tailgate area. I still keep stuff in storage tubs with covers.
