I think it summed it up pretty well. The Maverick can function as a truck and a car. I'm using it more as a car and occasionally as a truck. The Civic other than holding an incredible mount of cargo can't haul truck stuff. They are both great vehicles it depends on what you need. Interesting that the sound level in the Maverick is lower than the Civic.
I'm thinking this is what most people are doing these days.

Bought the Maverick because I was bored (and pissed off) with Honda after 23 years of ownership, and because Honda decided they weren't bringing back the Element.

Also jumped ship because Honda ain't what it used to be. Was driving home from work one day and heard a noise that sounded like metal on metal. I started poking around in the engine only to discover that I literally had no oil. Took it to mechanic who filled up the oil for me and said, "Oh...you just happened to pick the worst year for Accord engines, and in this year and model the engine pistons burn and leak oil." Asked how much to fix and he just laughed and said, "You can either keep adding oil, or you can get rid of your car."

Originally wanted to drive the Accord until parts started falling off, much like the super-reliable Civic I had that was traded in with 300K miles. Nah. Got 84K miles out of the Accord before selling it to buy the Maverick. Completely unacceptable for a Honda product.

Hoping the Maverick lasts a good, long time.

Car and Driver is usually not very forgiving towards domestic automakers but the article does give the Maverick a very good review.

Interesting to see the replies so far agree with the article. I do, too.
But I thought it was so far off the general mood of exuberance on the board that a lot of objections would follow.
That's exactly why I liked that article. I'm still waiting on my Maverick (Oct here) but if all I have to bide my time is glowing YouTube reviews and marketing material waxing poetic about cupholders, I start feeling like I'm going to be disappointed when I finally get it and realize it's.... just a vehicle.

As an owner of both a Maverick and a 2022 Civic, I can say that the article is pretty spot on. The Civic is WAAAYYYY more fun to drive, and comfortable on longer drives. Both of mine are base models (Maverick XL and Civic Sedan LX).

Where the Civic wins: $25,670 Canadian (2022 Civic LX)
  • Tech: Civic safety, lane keep assist, blind spot monitoring, adaptive CC, stereo etc is miles above the base model Maverick
  • Driving comfort: Civic feels more planted, secure, and overall more premium than the Maverick.
  • Fit & Finish: Interior design and materials are way more premium feeling
Where the Maverick wins: $33,853 Canadian as equipped (XL, 4K, AWD, 2.0, 17" Wheel Package, Spray In, Soft Tonneau)
  • Utility:'Nuff said
    • Tows my boat
    • Carries my cargo
    • Won't (likely) get stuck in the snow
  • Acceptable fuel economy (Civic wins here for sure, but considering...)
  • Fun factor: Overall more fun to own. I've seen dozens of similar Civics out there in my city, but only about 4 Mavericks since I've owned mine in Dec 2021.
  • Interior: I know that the Civic is more "polished", but I like the no-nonsense interior of my XL.
  • Ride height: Even though it's not that much higher, the driver ride height in the Maverick is a winner here.
I'm sure there's more things, but here's my quick list from a owners perspective.

Which would I pick if I could only have 1? Well... I'm not writing this in a Civic forum. (hint: it's the Maverick).

Anyhow, my 2¢.

Depends on the comparison. The Civic is one of best economy cars of all time and it's an achievement in itself for a brand new vehicle to be compared to it.
The Civic is also the best selling vehicle in California, arguably the largest market for the Mav. No one chose the Civic at random to make this comparison. The Mav marketing team doesn't get enough credit for the campaign they've run.

I thought it was a fair and amusing look at what your entry-level dollars buy. Of course it was apples to oranges, but it also shows that each is better for certain buyers. The "better" vehicle really depends on your needs and lifestyle.

The whole article can be deleted and replaced with only this quote:

“The Maverick can still function as a car a lot more effectively than the Civic can function as a truck.”

I'm not sure this is really apples to oranges - at the price levels we are talking about I suspect most users are comparing dollar for dollar. Now, some people simply don't want a truck, and even though the Maverick is small it is still larger than a compact (and bests most small SUVs by a foot). With that said, if parking/storage of your vehicle is not an issue (space), and you think a truck might be even remotely useful, I see this comparison happening a lot more than many realize.

The last time a truck was priced in the range of a compact vehicle was with the Ranger. The difference however is stark - the Ranger in its previous form was in no way shape or form practical for most of the population with only a small optional extended cab and absolutely no frills. The Maverick flips that script while being interesting (but not to the level of quirky) and practical. Ford won't be able to build enough.

I suspect that is the reason they are looking into dumping the escape - double down on the bronco sport and Maverick output.

These are the two vehicles we eventually want at our house.
We've owned a 2006 Civic since new and love it. It also has the best theft deterrent device, manual transmission!! During 3yrs friend was Assist DA in N.O. no vehicle w/mt was stolen. It's also a skill we want our kids to have.

Our other vehicle is a Fiat Abarth Cabrio manual - tons of fun to drive, might as well have a stick while they are still out there! Perfect compliment to the Maverick.
