Ok so my AC was intermittent and it has been determined by my dealer that my ambient exterior temperature sensor may be bad and the pig tail cable housing needs changed. Code P0073 Beiner Ford wanted $1350 plus tax to change the housing and sensor lol Here are my questions -

1. If it’s now unplugged, it can’t be intermittent, and so my AC should continuously work when I turn it on.

2. I’m aware this circuit is somehow attached to the start stop function which might affect that. I hate that feature anyway, fringe benefit?? Any reason I shouldn’t leave it unplugged indefinitely?

3. If I buy the pig tail and splice it in myself, do I need to disconnect battery terminals before working?

4. Any downside to splicing in a new pig tail? I can do this from the front of the bumper without removing anything, will take me less than 10 minutes.

5. I bought a new sensor for $37. Is this easy to just rip out and shove back in, reaching in from front? Think I’ll change the housing first and see if I’m good…

I work on gtrs not cars, so your help is much appreciated!! Cheers - John

Check this listing on Amazon, sensor part number is the same. Plug should work if so. Hopefully there is enough of the old plug left to help determine the wire orientation.

I'd splice it with some heatshrink butt connectors and put additional heatshrink on top. Disconnect the battery before you do it.

not under warranty?
Looks like road damage. The connector likely didn't get busted up like that on its own.

Personally I'd get the pigtail but remove the wire ends and transfer the connector housing onto the existing wires since the terminals still look fine. No wire splicing needed and an indy mechanic could probably bang that out in under an hour.

So I bought this kit, ripped it out, very easy from front of the bumper, spliced in new connector and sensor, and it took about 30 min to reset itself. Completely fine now, AC is great, no check engine light. Thank you so much, saved me $1500 at Ford!
You are welcome and great job resolving the issue without being taken advantage of by the stealership. Sometimes or most of the time it is the dealer, and not Ford, looking to make the big profit.

Biener Ford Manhasset, yes same business as Great Neck. I bought my Maverick in Jersey at Cadby Ford, but I live right by Biener and so I use them for service. So far I’ve had a few not great experiences like a cranky tech who didn’t feel like rotating my wheels, and a few very good experiences like Steve over there sending the mobile repair service to my home to sort out my 12v issue which ended up being a ground wire. Ultimately people are people, and I’m trying not to be a guy that 1 star reviews a place everytime I have a hiccup there. I expect I’ll use them for a long time so I’m hoping for good service moving forward. So far, the people who run the service department there have been very good to me, thankfully my Mav issues have been minimal. Cheers!

My dealer has a sign on service managers office window that says "talk to me if you feel that you did not get 5 star service".

I'm in the same boat and just bought the part. Did you disconnect the battery while swapping out the part?

Yes. Just the negative terminal that’s bolt mounted to the body, just to the right of the battery. Very easy… Just note, it took my Maverick a good 20 min after the splicing and swapping to refresh its brain and have the auto air functions working properly. Good luck!

Great, thank you. My dealer quoted me at $1,085 for the parts and labor for this job. I'll be very happy if I can manage to fix this on my own.

Disconnect the negative terminal attached to body, Put a blanket down under/in front of the bumper, , lay down, reach in there and literally pull the sensor out. Two wire splice to splice in the new housing and insert the sensor, push it back into the bumper. Make sure your wires are dressed and heat shrinked, and reconnect negative. Took me 12 minutes with a soldering iron, and a ratchet. Saved me $1300. Good luck!

So you cut out the old housing and then soldered the wires of the new housing to the already existing wires? Are the colors of the wires the same on the new part?
