My Ford Dealer is King Ford. 2nd best Ford dealer I’ve dealt with. The first best was
Brandon Ford in Tampa Fla.
So I live in Tampa. Years ago, tried to buy a vehicle from Brandon. They wanted to play most of the games. How much is the vehicle? Look at the great financing deal we have for you! Oh, we gave your key to our used car manager to check out your trade in. We can't find him right now. Etc. Knowing this was their reputation, I made sure to leave my "spare key". Just got up and walked out, got in my old vehicle and left!

Silverthorne CO Ford dealer is closing siting Fords decision to "restructure it's network" and also the Summit County tax structure which resulted in buyers paying more than purchasing elsewhere. So now for warranty work on my 23 XLT AWD I get to go to Denver (70 miles) or Glenwood Springs (90 miles) all while negotiating I-70's ability to shut down in a heartbeat both summer and winter. Wondering how far other forum members have to go for warranty work. Sorry, no prize for the furthest but you get bragging rights. regards

update. I did buy the Maverick in Florida then moved here. I only used the dealer for warranty work/recalls as I have a local mechanic. Rumors have a Chevy or Toyota dealer taking the spot. All new Ford inventory was removed from the lot in the last 24 hours.
Sounds like the dealer was out of trust with FMCC, a big NO-NO

I have 3 dealers within 15 miles of my house. The closest is 4 miles (where I bought the Mav) the middle is about 7 miles and only use them to pick up online accessories, and the furthest one is 15 miles away and I use them for warranty and service work.

Never really thought about how I use all 3 🤣
I also have 3 Ford Dealerships but within 20 miles of My House.

Looks like the Sales Tax excuse isn't completely accurate.

https://tax.colorado.gov/sites/tax/files/documents/SUTT_Motor_Vehicles_November_2021.pdf

Of course, maybe local buyers purchasing out of area aren't reporting the sale to their County Clerk. In IL, you can't title/plate the vehicle without paying the Sales Tax adjustment (if needed).

With no competing Ford dealers within 60 miles, I'm guessing the dealer wasn't willing to do upgrades and such to meet Fords' current standards. Plus, the ownership group is out of Idaho, so maybe not really easy to manage?

I'm not sure but I think the tax structure the OP is referring to is a county sales tax plus higher business taxes making it more expensive to buy there. The small city I moved from 2 years ago charged me business tax every year on furniture and fixtures. I did NO business in the city just lived there but because it was the mailing address for my LLC I had to pay every year. A friend who operated a physical location there said it added 10% to his prices that was passed onto customers. Plus the city had a city sales tax. He relocated his business 2 years ago just outside of the city limits and is saving money on operations. The Ford dealer in that city closed in 2010 for the same reason and moved out to the county where the taxes were much lower.
(preamble- I don't live in silverthorne but I have vacationed in summit county 11 out of the past 13 years.)

while there are local sales taxes in Summit County and Silverthorne, according to Google the total rate is actually lower than Denver. so whomever mentioned sales tax, that would not be the case, competing with Denver at least. I have no idea about taxes in nearby locales that are outside of summit county like Leadville.

The total sales tax rate in Silverthorne is 8.375% and includes the following:

  • Colorado State Tax: 2.9%
  • Summit County Tax: 2%
  • Summit County Transit Tax: 0.75%
  • Town of Silverthorne Tax: 2%
  • Summit Combined Housing Authority Tax: 0.725%

Here's a breakdown of the combined sales tax rate in Denver:

  • Colorado state sales tax rate: 2.90%
  • Denver city sales tax rate: 4.81%
  • Denver County does not impose an additional sales tax beyond the state and city rates.
  • Special sales tax rates, such as for the Regional Transportation District (RTD) and the Scientific and Cultural Facilities District, also contribute to the overall sales tax rate.
The total combined sales tax rate in Denver is currently 9.15%. This includes the state, city, and special district taxes. Keep in mind that Denver is a "home-rule" city, meaning it administers and collects its own sales tax separately from the state.

so, it's really about the property tax and low sales volume as the OP stated.

When the time comes for dealer servicing, it's going to be a big bucket of bummer-balls for me.

There's a dealer about 5 miles from me, but in our community when you talk about competence we are on the other side of that issue. Can't think of anything that would compel me to have locals service it, so the most straightforward option is 130 miles away, over a highway that can be dicey and gets shut down several times a year.

Sounds to me like the owner is taking advantage of a buyout offer from Ford and cashing in

Unless you're in the middle of BFE there's no way a Ford dealer can't make ends meet while the next closest dealer is 70 miles away
Cost of living in most of those mountain towns is absolutely insane. I don't think we will see a dealer apocalypse like 2008-2010 when manufacturers intentionally boxed out low volume dealers, but I can't imagine there is tons of money to be made at even medium volume dealers in very HCOL areas.

The town I grew up (pop 2,000 in rural Nebraska) had a GM and Ford dealer, and a couple used car lots when I grew up there. The GM dealership closed from GMs bankruptcy I believe, and the Ford dealer closed a few years ago when the owner retired. I think they only have one used car lot now too that is off to the side at a farm implement.

As much as people like to rip on auto dealers, I don't think there is really a lot of money to be made as an independent new dealer that isn't part of a mega-conglomerate, or used cars either unless you are a legitimately good business owner that puts in a lot of your own elbow grease with repairs and detailing.
