Hey everyone so I bought a used 2023 Maverick XL 2.0L AWD Ecoboost about 2 weeks ago. It had about 28k miles. On the specs it says 22 city and 28 hwy. When I left the dealership they gave it a full tank of gas. Since driving it home about 6 miles i mainly been driving in City with Eco mode on. My avg mpg started at 20.1 and is now showing 14.0. The highest I get it to is 19.3. I did my first fill up a few days ago and only got to 252 miles and had 11 miles left before E. I have towed my trailer around a few times that weighs about 1000 lbs. Since my 1st fillup I've driven 49 miles and my tank says I only have 170 miles left to empty! My avg mpg is also saying 13-15mpg. I use regular unleaded gas on first fill up. Is there something I can do to improve my mpg? Thanks

My 2024 AWD Ecoboost Lariat gives me an average of 27 mpg in my Appalachian mountains and that’s with me hauling ass.
On the flatland interstate, 31 mpg @ 75-80

Yeah pulling a 1,000 pound trailer with these mini trucks 15-18 sounds reasonable.

If you are doing a lot of stop and go or hit the peddle a lot especially towing - that's what's killing the mpg.
When you hear others saying they get in the 30's it is probably opposite of your driving conditions.

Example

I'm averaging a solid 32.5 mpg over 6K (hand calculated) - drive in eco 99% of time cruise control - rural - No towing - 85% driving 55-75. For fun I've been resetting my mpg meter once i reach speed and hit cruise control to see what the mpgs were minus getting to speed out my driveway. have been on screen averaging 40mpg consistently in light traffic. this is going 50 miles with maybe 3 traffic lights. this makes my miles to empty 540 on fillups - but if i deviate and hit normal or sport modes - get a bit peppy in eco - this all goes out the window - which you would expect.

Cheers

I am averaging 22 mpg with tremor trim, I can't see pulling a 1000 lb trailer making it lose that many mpg

The first 5 minutes or so the engine controls are in open-loop mode, and will use a huge amount of fuel to run rich and heat the coolant and oil and cat converter up to temperature. Its will take a bit longer with the 4k tow package, since it has more fluids to warm up. Then its gets a lot better as the system switches to closed-loop and much leaner burn. The EB is best suited to long highway trips. If you do a lot of short trips in an EB, you're always going to get crummy mileage due to those warmup times, and the Hybrid is probably a much better option in those conditions. However, just compare your real-world mileage to that of a Ranger or an F150, and notice that its twice as good.

I'm averaging just shy of 27mpg combined city/highway in my EB. Whether it matters or not I run Sunoco premium, 93 octane. I have yet to tow any trailer tho. Also I've been reading a lot on here about Eco and Sport modes? I must be getting up in the years because I haven't seen these modes on my Maverick 👀 are these on all trim levels? I have an FX4 package, does that negate Eco and Sport?? Besides it's the 2.0 EB...it's Sport all the time right?! 😆

Based on the info provided, something sounds off with the truck.

Next time you fill up, see how much gas is going it takes to fill it. If you are near empty, 13-14 gallons should not be a challenge.

Then calculate your mileage manually based on how many miles you get on that tank. I say "manually" because it is entirely possible your truck is misleading you with the trip computer. If possible, don't tow anything for that tank - reading your post, it is unclear how towing fits in to your mileage readings.

Finally, you can do all the usual things to maximize fuel efficiency: make sure your air filter is clean, keep your tires at 35 psi cold, use the auto/start stop if you are prone to having the truck idling for whatever reason...

Ford withheld those drive modes on FX4s to give us more "off-roadish" modes that most other trim levels don't have from the factory.

Ohhh!!! Ok, thank you for that info! I was hoping I wasn't losing it yet lol I hadn't really done much research on the FX4 before purchase. I more just wanted the Atlas blue EB with 4k tow and this one happened to have the FX4 package as well.

Proper recommended tire air pressure, fuel system cleaner, and oil change if due… hot weather and hills kill mpg so hopefully Improves with cooler autumn weather

From my experience with my MY22 AWD 4K Towing Pkg, yours numbers are really low. Granted you will always take a little hit towing but not earth shattering... As mentioned previously, verify its been maintained properly, air filter, tire pressure/condition, normal stuff, etc. Environmental and driving conditions like hills, mountains, stop & go traffic, oversized/off road tires, etc. could have an effect. Last but not least, Your Foot & Driving Style!! In other words, driving it like you stole it won't give you the best gas mileage

I've been getting very good mileage on my 2022 Ecoboost XLT AWD with towing package. I have almost 29,000. No longer interstate trips, mostly rural roads and using AC. 30.8 MPG since day one!!!
