Except the Flex was expensive, inefficient, and looked pretty weird.

Yep. Being able to haul 2 adults and 4 kids or 35 bags of 40 pound mulch--while fitting in a small garage and saving $100/mo on gas versus a larger SUV-- would be desirable to a lot of people.

For the back. You do what early suburbans did. Offer two options. A tailgate+glass or a more traditional SUV back swing up door (although the suburbans offer two swing out doors).
That would probably kill their explorer sales though. The Maverick and Explorer are about the same length, Explorer is just wider.

You're probably right. But the same could be said for the Ranger and Maverick, so who knows.

I'd.. buy the absolute shit out of that. A small(ish) SUV with 3 rows and 40(ish) MPG, starting at 20k(ish)? Hell. Yes.
Obviously it wouldn't start anywhere near $20k. A base model Escape starts at $26k and the hybrid starts at $28.5k

Maybe, but the Escape was never built to be a primarily "cheap" vehicle. The Maverick, on the other hand, was explicitly built for that purpose.
I feel like they could easily get it to start in the low 20k area. On a slightly different note, it's been feeling like the Escape has been on the chopping block for a little while. The design language is almost entirely different from every other Ford now adays and is, aesthetically at least, very "old" Ford. It looks to me like it is entirely possible that a new Mav crossover could come to replace the Escape altogether; maybe even just be the new Escape with a more "current" Ford design.

I could see that maverick brand be the cheaper enterly level truck suv etc...broncos being the out road suv, trucks, then mustangs. Then have the bigger suvs.

I... um... really like this. You could do a third row or have a huge trunk. Super interesting!

Well, considering Ford recent comments about a possible "Maverick" brand spin-off, that seems possible. I mean, other have already done it (Ram/Dodge and the like). Ford can stay the commercial fleet/big vehicle brand; think F-trucks, Explorer, Transit, and Ranger; Mustang will be the sporty, track oriented stuff. Bronco, as you said, could be the off-road centric stuff; and Mav could be pretty much commuter/economy/budget/entry-level vehicles. They seem to be going in that direction already, so it's not too much of a stretch.

How about a 2-Door Maverick with longer bed - kind of "Ranchero" style?
Yes, I was kind of disappointed when I saw it could not be configured with a longer bed and smaller cab. Would be even more useful as a work truck than it already will be.

Under the new sub-brand this could be the Maverick Flex.
