they are in case the rails come off it won't fly out of the truck while you're going down the road. Mine are under the seat, not worrying about it with the tonneau cover on the truck

Sorry guys. When I wrote about “issues” I meant if the divider flew out of the truck it wasn’t installed properly. It is rock solid when installed.

I just have the rails, and a hard tonneau cover. I’m having them cut/modified where they’ll be higher up and still fit under the tonneau. too many times having to remove them when I need to get things in the bed

I would recommend using the tether. I came out earlier today and one of the locks had popped open on it's own. It's conceivable that they could both do it at the same time. The tether is likely because Ford knows this could happen and don't want to be sued.
