Looking for a simple tail gate open warning switch and dash light

I am looking for a simple tail gate open warning switch and dash light.
I had one on my old Tacoma. Very simple. A mercury switch in the tail gate wired directly to the warning light near my dash.
can’t find anything like it now.

I've never hurt myself on my tailgate. BUT, I have bashed my shins on my drawbar sticking out.

I'll never understand, how in the world can one be so preoccupied that they forget their own child or pet when getting out of a vehicle and let them die from the heat or freezing cold. Their court sentence should be the same treatment imo.

I've left a full coffee on the roof a couple of times. Yeah, not in the same league but stuff happens. When I was a kid I used to like riding on the tailgate for short trips and nobody went to jail.

What is the Rear Occupant Alert System

The rear occupant alert system monitors vehicle conditions and notifies you to check for rear seat occupants when you switch the ignition off.


How Does the Rear Occupant Alert System Work

The system monitors when rear doors have been opened and closed to indicate the potential presence of an occupant in the rear seat.
A message displays in the touchscreen and an audible warning sounds when you switch the ignition off after any of the following conditions have been met:

• A rear door is opened or closed while the ignition is on.
• You switch the ignition on within 15 minutes of a rear door opening and closing.
• You switch the ignition on within 15 minutes of the alert having displayed or sounded.

Rear Occupant Alert System Limitations

The system does not function if any door is removed.
The system does not detect the presence of objects or passengers in the rear seat. It monitors when rear doors are opened and closed.
Note: It is possible to receive an alert when there is no rear seat occupant, but alert conditions are met.
Note: It is possible to receive no alert when there is an occupant in the rear seat, if alert conditions are not met. For example, if a rear seat occupant does not enter the vehicle through a rear door.
Note: The audible warning does not sound when the front door is opened before you switch the ignition off.

You're right, it was one of those situations where I was able to just drive out forward, and with the soft open on my tailgate, I didn't hear anything out of the ordinary.

After you put the truck in reverse, or go past it to drive, it keeps the back up camera on another 5 seconds or so before turning Off. It's like having an extra mirror as you are pulling out of a parking space. If the tailgate was down, it would show on the screen.

Adjusted for inflation how much more was that Tacoma than a Maverick?
Folks keeps wanting Ford to add their small things $$$...
Dimming rearview mirror.
Built-in garage door opener
Tailgate open light
Better interior
Power passenger seat
Auto walk away locking.
Etc..
..to the Maverick. It will be a $70,000 vehicle

Actually if the backup camera is in delayed mode.
It will keep the camera on until you reach 5 mph of forward speed.
Or put the Maverick into Park.

My wife's 2016 Escape does the same thing, but it's only for 5 seconds.

I also would like a light confirming my hood is latched, my spare tire is inflated to the correct pressure and my tonneau cover is locked

I can’t imagine not knowing the tailgate is down. Think I would know that before I got in truck, a Quick Look in rear view mirror plus a warning when you put it in reverse. But whatever makes ya happy all that matters

Especially if you are backing out, camera will be on ground
