The offset location of the license plate may take some getting used to. Of all the styling cues on the Maverick, this is the one thing that makes me scratch my head. There were flip down license plates 50 years ago to hide gas caps and they could have done the same here to cover the receiver. But for some reason, they chose to accentuate the receiver and move the plate to the side. Almost like that Nissan Cube with the asymmetrical window arrangement, I don’t hate it but it could have been executed differently. Anyone else have thoughts around it?

I actually really like how it had come together, makes a lot of sense for the way the truck is laid out. Also kind of feels like that the hitch receiver and back of the truck is going to be pretty low in comparison to midsized and larger trucks. I am just glad i live in a state without front plates, I don't see a location that it can be placed easily without looking like an afterthought.

Street rod guys have done a flip up plate over the receiver for decades and the plate then rests on the hitch ball mount. Certainly not a dealbreaker for me, but plates are usually centered. Land Rover is doing a lot of offset license in their design also.

There is a picture or video somewhere that shows the front plate on. I can’t find it but it’s not horrible like the full size Bronco.

The first generation ranger had its blue oval badge shifted to the left on the grill. I know they aren't really paying homage to that particular design with the Maverick, but it does remind me of it, just on the back side.

To meet legal requirements license plates must be within 15° of vertical while the vehicle is being driven. We didn't want to sacrifice the low bed height, departure angle, or the hitch just to have the plate under center.
Is this confirmation of affiliation finally? 😉

If it wasn’t talked about, I wouldn’t have even noticed. My Jeep wrangler was on the left rear, no one mentioned it as odd.

I have a Tj unlimited and hadn’t given it any though until you mentioned it.

The offset rear plate has made identification of a Maverick easy, the 2 times I’ve come upon one in the wild.

Anything centered ain’t a Maverick!

Seems like some Honda CRVs, Toyota Rav4s and Range Rovers have offset plates. There are probably a few others. Can't think of another truck though.

I don't mind it because I can see why they did it that way. The receiver I guess works best at a certain height, so better to tuck it into the bumper than to raise the entire truck to accommodate that. Also if they had put the receiver lower to be under the bumper that would have been made its departure angle worse. I'm not too keen on having it flip up and down like the old style that hid gas fillers, fewer random small moving parts the better in my opinion. The other option would have been to put the license plate onto the tailgate itself. Thank freakin' goodness they didn't go that route, lol.
