I upgraded to 17x7.5 aftermarket wheels with 245/65/17 All Terrains on my Hybrid XL Mav and I'm ordering a spare wheel+tire and wanted to see if anyone has swapped out their factory spare underneath for a larger wheel/tire?

I don't have a tow hitch and want to keep the bed clear so if it doesn't fit in the factory spare location I'll probably just end up keeping it in my garage in case I need it but would prefer to have it more easily accessible in that scenario- any other ideas?

You'll see that this guy fit I believe a 245/65R17 under there. I can't tell if the serrated sheet metal part meant to puncture the tire in a rear end collision is still there or if they removed it to make the tire fit.

I would rather have a smaller spare under the truck than a spare in my garage......

So this is what it looks like with the small 215/60R17 "Full size" spare that comes with the Maverick. As you can see there's minimal clearance between the spare and the serrated part so I don't think there's any way they kept the serrated part with the 245/70R17 tire and most likely trimmed it off like another member on these forums did, I can't find that thread unfortunately but do remember it.

245/65R17 will fit. I'm running one. 70 series sidewall probably doesn't fit.

this is what I was hoping to hear!!

To confirm: you have a 245/65/17 mounted under the bed in the factory spare location? any trimming or modification required? any chance you can post a pic?

Yes. No modification. I'm not near my vehicle but will try later today. There are other folks here running that tire size that will confirm it too, either in this thread or if you search the tire size.

You're saying it fits in the spare tire area with no modification?

Ummm... If you trim off those metal teeth, what would the spare tire do in a major rear end collision? Kill me in my Maverick or kill the one who rear ended my Maverick? My angle grinder and I are eagerly awaiting your answer. 😄

Much appreciated! I just realized I've got you on IG as well :)

I assume it was straight-forward: just unbolt the factory spare and bolt up the aftermarket spare with new lugs?

I believe it's a 245/65/17 tire, so the overall diameter is a little smaller.

You won't need lugs. Rather than trying to explain it, here's a video that shows how it attaches.
