For the last week and a half the SEL was randomly coming on. The app says " The engine control system has detected an electrical concern with the engine knock sensor". My ford dealer looked at it and says the knock sensors need replace. Light was not on when I drove into the dealer this morning. Repair should be covered under my extended warranty but I keep thinking a knock senor shouldn't go bad in 49k miles. Has anyone else dealt with this issue?
Parts are $113.60 and 6 hours of labor to repair which is $1300.00 total.

They can go bad but unless they were tested i wouldn't trust the dealership.

My Audi A4 had a code for the knock sensor, which is a real pain to get to. I replaced a leaking temperature sensor and the knock sensor code went away. The moral of the story is proper diagnosis and not just throwing parts is vital. Dealers (if they have good techs) have the equipment to live stream data and diagnose by looking at sensor data.

6 hours of labor? For what? They're both on the front of the engine.

I trust a dealership service advisor about as much as I do the average politician. A second opinion is free at a second dealership (if one is convenient to you). But don't say a thing about the other dealership when you take it in. Just describe the symptoms and see what they say.

I'm wondering out loud about this... Is a knock sensor part of the longer emissions warranty? I'm guessing no, but I don't know. It does help control the fuel mix, so maybe?

That first sentence had me laughing. I work for a commercial truck dealer .
I plan on having a second dealer look into it. I'm only having the dealer look into it because I have a warranty. As far as I can tell the knock sensor is not considered to be a part of the emissions system.

SIX hours labor. Where the heck are they located inside the engine?lol. Yes I saw other poster say front of engine.Just saying the sounds like a HUGE excess on labor ,. BUT you have extended warranty which has almost paid for itself already. BUT it sounds fishy to me .

Back in my day 6 hours was given to R&R and entire engine on a FWD car like a cavalier.

The knock sensor is listed under Emissions covered items under the Ford Protected Extended Service Plan. The issue is the Emissions warranty only covers major emission components of which the knock sensors are not major.

Only the Ford Premium CARE extended warranty plan covers the Emission related items below including the knock sensors.

FYI I purchased an extended warranty from Zeigler Auto Group (factoryplans.com) as they had the best prices that I could find online. I've done business with them before and like how easy it is to get instant quotes and the ability to later cancel and get a refund. You can also use your Ford points.

Would the Ford Standard bumper-to-bumper new vehicle warranty cover this repair as long as it is in the 36 month 36,000 mile window.

Yes, of course the 36/36,000 bumper to bumper covers this. After that the longer emissions warranty does not cover knock sensors.

Ford’s Emissions Warranty (Except California)

—8 years or 80,000 miles (whichever occurs first) for catalytic converters, electronic emissions control unit, and onboard emissions diagnostic devices, including the battery energy control module (BECM), and emission-related reprogramming of modules.

Its been a few weeks and still no check engine light since the dealer told me I needed the knock sensors replaced. The dealer has not contacted me about replacing them even though I told them to order the parts for the repair. Seems a little strange that they haven't followed up with me.

I was thinking about the issues I've had with my maverick. December of 22 I had multiple codes for a power train failure. The dealer told me nothing was wrong and sent me on my way. I'm starting to think my dealer isn't being truthful about what is going on or maybe they just don't know. I'm still waiting on them to perform recalls to. They keep saying the parts are on back order.
I wonder if what code will come up in December of 2024 that turns out to be nothing?

Hi there! Would you send us a private message with your VIN and dealership name and location? I’d like to look into this concern on my end.
