This is the setup I have in my truck bed, The centerpiece is Mabett’s sliding/pivoting bed divider. The net does well for securing loose small items such as from a grocery run. I modified the bed divider so I can slide and lock it anywhere along the length of the side rails without requiring a tool.

I use a super fancy 2x10 cut to fit from home Depot, cost me a whole $8.

I have a leftover cargo net, that I use to keep lighter items near the tailgate. I also cut and fit a piece of Trex (I bought the gray) for the first insert slots. Though it was more expensive than a piece of wood, it fit better, and looks better; IMO. I use some left over flexible foam to keep it from making any noise.

I have a pull-out tray that gives me more storage area than a 2x6 would give me in the cut-out area.
Like me, it ain't pretty but it's still functional. It's no show truck.

It holds more than using a 2x6 across.

In less than 30 seconds you can pull the 2 side brackets out and it lays flat for large items. You don't have to find a place to store it, if you need to use the whole bed, like you would a bed extender.

It pulls out for easy unloading.

I tried the 2X6. Too heavy for me and cumbersome even with the hinge. It only gives you 15 inches of space and stuff still fell over the top it's just not enough storage for me.
And I still had a bend over the tailgate in order to remove the items.

I found the extending bars to still allow stuff to slide underneath.
I am short and do not have long arms. I use a combination of milk crates (to hold anything I may deem squishable) and a dedicated fireplace poker so I can hook whatever I am after and pull it towards me. If I use a bed organizer of some species, I want something that doesn't require me to jump into the bed and take even 5 minutes--rain comes to mind--to unhook/unscrew/unspringload if needed. With more time and seeing what others are doing, I may come up with a new system but in the interim this works.
